4 Speed Overdrive Automatic Kit
« on: March 05, 2014 - 04:33:23 AM »
Hi

So first of all i have a 440 big block challenger with TCI 3 Speed automatic... but relay want to do a overdrive swap soon.

I realy like this car with automatic, so my idea was to order the Keisler Automatic Kit. It realy was perfect; No bodywork needed, all parts are included, seems to be a clean and perfect way to go. But now Keisler is out of buiseness and thats why i dont know what to do.

Does anybody know if there is a another 4 speed automatic kit on the market like this from Keisler?

I wrote a mail to Passion Performance, it seems they have a nice Auto to Manual Kit with 5 Speed Transmission. But to be true with a 4 speed auto i would be happier!

Thanks a lot. Tom

The Passon 5 speed is an OD that fits without any cutting. OD really makes our cars more useable IMO. The bell housing for a 4L60 is available from quicktime? It is possible to piece together your own kit.

Are there good experiences with Gear Vendors as an alternative?

And you can go with a 518 4 speed OD automatic. Shelbydogg has done the conversion without having to cut the structure, but he did have to fab a new trans mount.

GV is a good conversion as well , it will fit without cutting as well but you may have to dent the tunnel a little .
Hurst drivelines has most of the same conversion parts available as well

Hi

Thanks for your ideas.

About Gear Vendor i dont like this very much... I want everything feels like original, but with a overdrive. A 4 Speed Auto Trans feels exactly like the 3 speed, but with one extra gear. But the GV is a "added" solution even i dont like how to use. And this is the reason i dont like the 518 transmission very much.

If i want to do the Passon 5 Speed swap the car needs the hump from the manual shifting car. And that means bodywork also... but of course can be done.

Which transmission was used by Keisler? Is it possible to get all that parts from a other seller or was it a Keisler build?

The shifter detent plate so that you can use your stock slap stick shifter, and starter adapter plate are the only parts you would need to make/source that I can remember . Other than that various manufacturers can supply the rest . This is for a 4L60 OD

Hi

So today i got a mail from passon performance. The complete auto to 5 speed manual Transmission kit costs something about USD 7500.- + shipping costs. It seems to be a very nice kit, but to be true this is lot more then i expect.

But ok now i want to know how much it will be, if i go with a 4L60 automatic Transmission like the Keisler was. For me it seems a very nice way to go because it fits without any mods on body. Does anybody know where i can get a good rebuild 4L60 transmission which can handle 550hp? I already asked monster transmission but dident get a reply.
I think i need a lot of parts that it will fit to the big block; Flex Plate, Crossmember, Driveshaft, Throttle Position Sensor, Speedometer output, Transmission Controller, Isolator and it would be nice if i get a little overview... Sadly in our county i dont find american cars to part out and so i cant try what it needs. Everything i need i have to order in U.S. (and shipping costs are not less).

The best thing would be if there is a Transmission pro who can offer me most of this parts in a package.

Regards

I forgot, Keisler also supplied a modified tailstock that uses a manual speedo cable, which they also supplied. The kit from them was $5K if I remember right?  I remember pricing it all out from various vendors and I could have saved $500 but it was not worth it due to all the various shipping costs and no warrantee..... mute point now.  Try Bowler transmission, maybe they could build you a kit? They seem to have a good rep  on other pro-touring forums?

I would buy a Kit for 5k right now... But i dont know where to take a good transmission and the other stuff, dont know exactly what parts but sure they are still available from other companys.

I was on the website from bowler already, but they want 5k even for the 4L60. I think a complete Kit would cost a lot more  :-\ !! But i will ask them now.

I did the 518 conversion by myself and it's been great.  A number of people going this route.  For a big block you need to change the bell housing...  not sure if there is a conversion plate for that or not.

The swap is just like my 3 speed but it kicks into OD flawlessly.

Transmissions I was looking at was gearstar or mikes transmissions. Both can build a 4l60 if you want electronic or 200r4 pr 700r4with an adapter to match a mopar block.
