    Ignition switch cover color

    Re the attached pictures of the outside cover that goes over the ignition switch, what is the OEM finish: Chrome, Stainless steel or painted grey, etc.?  Mine was so tarnished/discolored I couldn't tell what the original finish was. Also, after filing and sanding out several large gouge marks caused the the key, any of the original finish is now gone.  :feedback:

    "usraptr" = United States raptor - bird of prey = United States Bald Eagle.  FYI, somebody else thought of it first so I had to drop the "O" in raptor.

    I just went and bought a new one and then had it reprogrammed to the original key so it also kept the door locks the same key tumbler pattern.

    Topcat, I may do that but in the mean time I'm still looking for an answer to my question.  From looking at the picture to the E-bay link, it looks chrome.  Is that correct?

    I recall is was a chrome. But a poor job. Never polished out.
    I've been in my car since it was new.

    It never shined like a perfect chrome.
    No way could've been zinc. It would've worn off too easily. Keys, missing the slot, and jingling on it.

    Here is my original. I took it off of the key cylinder the other day.

    I really think now it was actually epoxy painted a pewter silver.

    The one on my 73 is regular shiny chrome.  The one pictured above almost looks like a matte nickel chrome.  My A-body convertible sun visors and rear view mirror base were originally done in a matte nickel chrome.

    1970-71 were a dull nickle finish while 72-74 were shiny chrome. None were ever painted :2cents:

    There appears some tiny bubbles on it.
    That's why I suggested it was painted. Could be flash.
