Narrowing the e body 8.75 rear.

Anyone do a detailed thread on this?  I bought really wide custom wheels dirt cheap and I need to narrow the stock rear a bit. Should be pretty simple right since the center section pops out and no pinion adjustment would be needed?  Not like a full rebuild.

How much do you need?  Spring relocation might do it or check into a B-body rear, narrower & plentiful.

  Sometimes you can cut the ends off if you know what you are doing and trim down the axles, 8-3/4 have pretty meaty splines that can be chased and lengthened to a certain length and then trimmed off to allow correct axle length.

Simple if you can cut off the ends, weld them back on the housing without warping, and have the ability to cut down the axles and respline them. Otherwise you run the risk of chasing down $1000 worth of rear end mods because you saved $400 on wheels.

However, if you talking about only an inch or less per side, you could swap in a B body rear.

How much narrower is the B-body rear?

Depending on the year you get, approximately .75" per side.

I actually saved about $3k on wheels.  Fully forged and in great shape.  I can't seem to find any b body rear ends either.  Plus, I already moved the spring perches in and have my springs 3" inward.  The next step, if easy enough, would be narrow the axle housing.

Simple enough , cut off the ends remove the nessisary amount & reweld the ends on but you need a jig to keep everything in line / straight & then you need custom axles or respline the originals shorter

Surprisingly, I didn't have to narrow the rear.  An 18x12 with a 335/30/18 tire fit with offset shakles.  There's a half inch of clearance between the tire and the springs.  The quater lip may be an issue on bumps but I don't know if there's 4" of travel in the suspension to where it will matter.
