Way to go Roadrunner,

I think I am going with the heads, 10 comp pistons as well and a mild cam for drivability.  With the heads, extractors, 3" pipes and a good dyno tune, it will make things come to life!! :money:

Kenny, I had a chat with Matty, he is interested in the right hook console and the shifter. I would just give him a call.

Not bad but I have my own tricks to make them flow , I would have to dig for the sheets , around 245 stock maybe , I recall gaining approx. 15% flow , the exhaust responded far better at 23%

I recently picked up a set of the CNC'd Stealth heads for the Roadrunner.  One thing that hasn't been mentioned that was a big plus for me was the fact that the Stealths looke very original once painted.  I'm going for a 70's correct hotrod look and don't recall ever seeing any of the cars with big slab sided aluminum heads back then.  If you're going for the modern racecar no matter, but if you want something that could pass for stock, Stealths all the way.  Still trying to make a final decision between stroking the original 383 or going the route of a 440 sixpack motor, either way I have my heads for the build.

Hey Jim,

Make it in to a 496 and buy a 383 six-pack intake, it would be a sick engine with heaps of grunt :2thumbs:

Hey Jim,

Make it in to a 496 and buy a 383 six-pack intake, it would be a sick engine with heaps of grunt :2thumbs:

That was my original plan and then I started getting advice that the pistons are too short, the stroke too 'wide' making the pistons prone to rocking in the bore.  Since my whole point to building the 383 vs a larger 440 is that its the original motor, and I'm not sure the extra wear & tear on the motor with the longer stroke is worth it.  Plus, folks like Chryco & others here strongly recommend the longer rod length of the original 440 vs the shorter rods in a 496.   In my reading there seems to be some different points of view on rod length, with most agreeing the longer rods work better on a street motor.  The stock 3.75" 440 crank only yields 431 cubes in the 383 so that's why I'm leaning towards the 3.9" stroke crank with rods only slightly shorter than std. 440's used in Muscle Motors 450 c.i. kit.  I already have an original Direct Connection 383 6 Pack intake & mechanical carbs so I just have to decide and go for it.  I actually called a local speed shop about the build this morning, and once again was told building the 383 was a waste of money & time since its 'only' a 383 and not really worth saving.....this even after explaining I'd had the car & original motor for the last 40 years...

Ask 73 E about his lowly 400/451 build , the 383/438 will make power

Chryco,

Whats the difference in $$$ with porting the iron as opposed to buying Stealth alloys??
