I have seen these with a capulated nut and some with a stud hanging out of them and others with a bolt that goes in too. It is 5/16 UNC from memory, and they do have a bit of length to them also, not sure why they do, but they just do. Someone will chime in and give you the correct length i hope. :2thumbs:

Thanks. How do I get to the back of the dash to set the bolt thru? Not much space back there.

Have a look and see if the capulated nut is still their, i have seen broken bolts in this exact location, this may be why you do not have a bolt in place, pulling the seat out of the way is the very best way, or if you can twist your body and neck in a way that you can see under their. :2thumbs:

Thanks guys, I can see where the bolt should come out of. I can see the other side nut. I'll go to napa tomorrow with a picture and see what they can find.

Might be just as easy to remove the existing bolt on the other side and let the column sit their while you take the sample down to match up. :2thumbs: It will not hurt the column to do this as long as you do not try driving it that way

so, i tried to put the bolts in and the connection behind it must be stripped. i cannot get the bolt to stay in. it just spins and spins. is there a nut behind it? or, just a treaded section of the column that might have been damaged? any suggestions?

After reading posts here, I'm a little confused and want to help as others are.

So what part are we talking about? The hardware to attach the bracket to the "dash" or the hardware to hold the bracket to the "steering column".

Reason I say confused is cause you mentioned "threaded part in the column" but then "back of the dash" is mentioned.

sorry, i'm probably explaining it wrong. i'm talking about the two bolts that connect the column to the dash from underneath. one is firmly screwed in. i was missing the other and ordered a new set. the issue is, i cannot get my hand behind the dash enough to see if i can place a nut back there. the bolt i received a washer and nut that is attached, but only will go up the bolt about 1/8 of the way before it stops. does that make it more clear? or, just more confusing?

EMCD: Does this picture help? If you're talking about the two studs that attach column to the lower part of the cowl/pedal bracket, I believe they are 1/4-20, ~2" long.  There is supposed to be a welded nut on the bracket and there is a raised non-threaded portion in the stud to prevent it from going all the way through.

it does, thanks. will i have to pull the dash out? i'm guessing that the welded nut on the back side has been knocked off. it's not catching on anything when i try to screw in the stud.

I would use something like this, or use a jacknut if the original nut is gone, but if it is still on, you can drill it larger and use and oversized stud
