383 autos being quicker than 440 4-speeds? Huh??  :???: :dontknow:

Maybe its just the torque converter giving that sensation of "feeling faster?"

Once you get past the fat ink hype of the advertisers, and the "special handling and prepped" test mule cars, ther was precious little difference in actual timeslips. And toss in the production variances of mass production and that does lead to the high 14-15 second 426 hemis and high 14 second 440s. Yes one 1968 Charger R/T hemi that did 15 second plus in the quarter as delivered to the dealer.
This is the main reason Chrysler insisted that Al Kirschenbaum and his band on merry men supertuned the hemi cars (and a lot of the 440+6 and 440+4) cars before a magazine road tested them.
Al and company could easily shave off one to one and a half seconds from a hemi car.
And in the real world where I lived many 440 cars were shown the tailights of a 383 bee or runner. And many of the above were shown the door by  340 Swingers. All depended on assembly and state of tune at the time.
So yes - if that VP 383 was a good example and the 440s weren't as sharp. And these cars were a bulk loan/purchase from Chrysler as to endorse Chrysler vehicles - so they would be bulk supplied without any special prep work.
Bottom line - don't sneeze at a 340 or 383 just because you've got a 440 under the hood. Guarentees nothing.

Not to be too far off the topic but my next door neighbor and i will be going to see Mountain ("Mississippi Queen" from the soundtrack of the original VP) this evening in Atlanta. Two of the three original members (Leslie West, Corky Laing) are playing. As well, several dates on Mountain's tour have been designated as Cream Tribute shows - tonight's show being the final scheduled one of those. Seems the third original member who died from a shooting incident back in '83 involving his gf was a producer for Cream in thier heyday; the girlfriend is supposed to have done album cover art for some of Mountain's albums including "Nantucket Sleighride" thus the link between the two bands  :guitar: :guitar: :guitar:

Rev and Redline you KNOW i'd have contacted ya's about coming by but this is just a quick to and fro road trip :banghead: It would be cool if in the scheme of things your RTSE fires up for the first time as Mountain is playing "Mississippi Queen" though :patriot: :guitar:

:iagree:

The first one is less corny and is in the era and will always be the cult classic. Remake is good also, more car shots but...yeah.  :(

Maybe the remake had more Challengers, in the remake they did crash a Challenger.  :gripe: :pissed: :stomp: >:(

Wow if the original was LESS CORNY then the remake should be burned. Burpin thought the first one had issues. But keep in mind Burpin only saw the original for the first time this year. On a second note, what other car movie should Burpin watch.

....Burpin only saw the original for the first time this year. On a second note, what other car movie should Burpin watch.

Timing and the era had a lot to do with it Burpin. I know there's going to be a lot of younger people that are going to start tossing stones at me, but it was part of the era then. To view it with today's eyes and mindset makes it easy to be jaded. Guy hops in car races across desert, crashes. Yeah its pretty short on Academy Awards by 2005 standards. The whole Easy Rider/Vanishing Point/Bullitt/Dirty Mary Crazy Larry were part of it. Well Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry were getting to the end of it, but still a good flick - for that time. Put any of those into today's focus and they are all cheesy and cheap.
I remember 4 of us went to the Drive-In in my 1968 road runner ( with the transplanted 440 six pack from a wrecked Super Bee) when Vanishing Point came out. There were about 250 hi-po cars full of punks like us. I wished I had filmed the 10 minutes or so of us leaving the Drive-In. I couldn't film it 'cause I was just as nuts as the other 249 punks gone ape chit. There must have been fatalities all over the country by kids leaving that movie.
I'm not sure if - I don't dare say it - F&F or 2F2F had the same effect on today's kids when it came out.

If you weren't there a lot is lost in translation.

But get
Bullitt
Dirty Mary Crazy Larry
and the old counter-culture standby Easy Rider

and maybe play some Steppenwolf very very loud. :grinyes:

Guys I was not saying the 383 car was quicker. I was saying the film crew used it to keep up to the 440 car for high speed filming.

A quote from Carey Loftin the stunt coordinater for Vanishing Point..

"We towed the Camaro with the fifth car, the 383 automatic. I used that one because if you miss a gear and your line goes slack you lose the car. I'd rather use an automatic than risk a chance of losing the car. That 383 was a good running car. In fact, it would probably run just as fast as that 440."

This does not sound like the same article but is still interesting. Keep in mind though that this article appeared in a magazine cover dated March 1986  .

Those of you with DVD VP's go to the crash scene and frame by frame it and watch a perfect un molested hood come flying over the bulldozers. Fun movie, Like 6Pk I watched it in the theatre when it first came out. Hey, NZ loves it, he didn't see it in the theatre unless he holds his age better than his booze!!  :grinyes:

Thats probably the only thing in the original crash seen, the hood, no buldge, not even a couple of black paint "scoops"  just flat and white.  :P

Nope, only seen it on TV a-g-e-s ago.  ;D

A copy of it is easy enough to send, but they are in DVD Region 4 and our format will probably not work.

Zone 1: North America
Zone 2: Europe, Japan, South Africa, Israel, Lebanon, Middle-East.
Zone 3: Korea
Zone 4: South America and Australia
Zone 5: Russia, North-East countries, Africa.
Zone 6: China

Zone 7: Reserved
Zone 8: Special international venues (airplanes, cruise ships, etc.)

However JSK/H&B have an 808 player model out that will play Regions 1-6.
