"Members in Your State" Redux
« on: March 25, 2014 - 11:59:04 AM »
There have always been problems with the Members in Your State thread, but until fairly recently they've been things we could work around. At this point, I think we've reached a character limit. I talked to Ross, and there aren't any good database add-ons for the site, so I wanted to see what ideas people have to fix that thread.

My suggestion, FWIW, is to break the thread into several regions, each with its own thread. This isn't as convenient, but it will keep things so people can sign up. Any other notions?

I wouldn't have a problem with that. Maybe even a Members in Your State forum with fixed threads for each state or region.   :dunno:

Is there a way of making a second column? Is it character quantity or the length of the thread and needs a second page?
If it needs to " turn the page" I understand how that wouldn't work. And I guess a second column wouldn't work
either. Well never mind. I'm not computer savvy enuf to have any better ideas.  :banghead:

Andy,

In the test section, I tried moving it into 2 columns using HTML code, but the big problem was a max overall character count of 10,000.

That was a good idea though.

I'm flying back to the sandbox tonight. Hopefully people will talk this over, but when I get back, if no one has an objection, I'll implement the multi-thread approach.

How about splitting it into four?

International
Canada
West Coast US (west of Mississippi River)
East Coast US (east of Mississippi River)

Canada and International are both pretty small. Any objection to having them together?

If they're small enough together without having to do this again any time soon, then combining seems like the way to go.

Next question: is east and west enough for the US?

I agree the forum could use something like this. You guys figure out exactly what y'all want and how you want it to work and we will see if we can make it happen.... :2thumbs:

In my mind, east, west is easiest to figure out.  It might be more difficult to determine if NY or NJ should be in Nee England for example.  And what are the regional boundarys.

In this  case you are either west of the river or not.

I also figured it would be less work for you mods.

I agree that that will be a lot easier to figure out. I'm concerned about how much time it'll buy us, though.

I like the "member in your own state" thread idea.  Or even divide the country up into 1/4's?  North East, South East, North West & South West.  There would just need to be clear boundaries.  I hate looking through that thread looking for guys in my state.  Good luck with whatever you decide.

I think if you started a new list or lists with ACTIVE members, it would be quit a bit smaller. :2cents:

That would definitely make it smaller. Not sure if we wanna start booting people off the list, though.
