Working 340 six pack setup value?
« on: March 25, 2014 - 01:14:30 PM »
I am looking at a 1973 Dodge Challenger Rallye.  It was originally a 340 four barrel and someone has put a full working six pack setup on it.  I was contemplating buying this Challenger and for simplicity of a driver would probably switch it back to the four barrel setup.

What is a ballpark figure or estimated range of the value of a full working 340 sixpack setup?  Intake, carbs and cleaner.  I am just looking for a rough estimate ~ $1,000 to $3,000?

Thanks for any and all advice.

Depends a lot on whether or not it's an original dated set-up from 1970, or a newer Mopr Performance set-up.

Alright, thanks.  I am not sure which it is at this point.  I may try to run up and look at the car this weekend.  The seller purchased the car 15 years ago with the six pack setup already on it.  1973 340 Challenger Rallye.

Attaching the only picture of the intake I have at the moment.

I would say a fairly quick sale might be in the $1500 range complete. If the set up is original dated 70 stuff you might squeeze closer to $2000 (would take longer to sell finding the correct buyer)....If you had a correct 70 air cleaner (which you don't) the story would be very different. :2cents:

That doesn't sound too far fetched in my opinion....He could trade for a nice "workig" 4bbl set-up plus some cash  :dunno:

Yeah I'm lacking in the "cash" part, that's where the laughter came from, but hey, if u can't seem to sell it, there's a new air gap and a 750 Holley (elec choke) with ur name on it, as well as a new 14x3 k&n w/Xtreme flow lid. I'll pay shipping for urs and mine.

I haven't bought it yet but you guys have given me some things to think about.

I have heard how hard these six packs are to keep in tuned and running good.  Are they pretty difficult, maybe a learning curve over the single carb setup?

I have owned several original six pack cars and I would say that's a myth.
The last set of originals I had rebuilt by Scott Smith Harms. I bolted them on, fired the car right up and haven't touched them since.. :2cents:

I think if not original and in very good shape then 1500 is pushing about the max. It seems that I've seen new complete set ups
for the 1800-1900 range. So to get top dollar I think someone would want #s matching set up, If they don't need #s matching they could buy new and avoid the resto process.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I have allot of experience with Mopar, "Six packs" and in Chevy speak, "Tri-Powers"  Both of which are Holley setups.  They are not hard to tune, if they haven't been buggered up over the years:  Examples:

1. Throttle shafts worn   VERY common prob
2. Metering plates and jetting.  Over the years people tend to mess with these while really not knowing what they were doing
3. Changing over from vacuum operated secondaries to mechanical
4. Plain worn out carbs over the years
5. Buggered up throttle linkage between the carbs
6. Improper idle solenoid adjustment/inoperative soleniod

Most perceived tuning issues are one or a combo of the above issues.  Also, when one or all carbs are removed, the throttle linkage between each must be adjusted as per manual specs.  Its not a remove and then just place back on.  Again, not hard but a little time consuming

Even the new replacement Holley carbs do not have the proper metering plates.  Yes, they will run out of the box but are not the correct metering plates as originally used back in the day

Numbers matching will bring bigger bucks no doubt:  If they arent, yes, they are worth less, but will most likely cost the new owner allot of money to get the carbs restored/in proper running condition
