For years I used the base of this type engine stand (see photo).
Sometimes it was a little too wide to get my engine hoist around so I made a similar looking four wheel frame, just a little narrower

I used snowmobile pads , 3 of them 1 under each side of the K frame & one under the tail of the trans to roll it underneath the body , each pad had 4 castors on it

I agree that the stand you use will have to be narrow, low and able to move in four directions is a plus.

The lower the better as well, you don't want something high off the ground as it will only make you jack the car higher.

Last but not least it needs to support the tranny at the rear.

I guess there is no reason other than we have never done it. Would I just need an engine hoist? Also the fenders are on the car which I do not want to remove. Can I still lift the car without removing the fenders?  Thanks

On a different note, I use to ride a 750-H2. Crazy fast, for its time.
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

Yes virtually every engine was installed this way from the factory except maybe some of the Max Wedge where the engine would be still installed the same way but I am not sure the manifolds would clear !!

I probably installed 20+ engines with the set I bought .
 Yes the car can be lifted with the front sheet metal all in place

Just ordered them...great idea!!  Did you make any mods on them??   I assume they can handle the weight since it's evenly distributed

Don't be scared ;) I had never done one before either....it was easy!!  And trust me I'm no mechanic.....

I do it from the bottom , far faster & the engine trans & suspension goes in virtually complete except for the rad & fan shroud & maybe the fan !
 I have lifted the front of the car with my legs , place 2 stands under the front spring eye & use the diff weight to counterbalance the nose & it is only approx. 150 lb lift , roll the k with the engine & trans under , lower the nose & start the K frame bolts , easy !!!

Neil, do you remove the rear tires, or do you just get the jack stands tall enough to allow enough "pivot"?
