AllPar article gets it wrong?
« on: March 27, 2014 - 03:34:13 PM »
On AllPar's website there is an article written by Richard EHRENBERG   http://www.allpar.com/mopar/440.html   on the history of the 440 6-pack motors. "They ordered a trio of Holley's best centerhung-float 2300 deuces, totalling 1,200 cfm".

Correct me if I am wrong, but the 6-pack setup has a 350 cfm center carb, and the 2 outboard carbs are 500 cfm each, if my math is right that is 1350 cfm, not 1200. I would expect non-Mopar related webpages to be misinformed but one would think a website that goes by the name ALLPAR would have caught this. Seems like sloppy editing to me.

I thought it was the opposite, 500 cfm center and outers were 350cfm each, making 1200.  But I'm no expert

That sounds about right. You want the higher CFM on the center carb.

Were the carb sizes the same for the 6 pack small blocks?

I have read (probably on this site) that 2bbl carbs are measured differently than 4bbl carbs for air flow rates.  Though they are claimed to add up to 1350 cfm, the actual rates are really closer to 1200 cfm.  I don't have the science to reference to, so believe what you want.  J

Divide the two barrel rating by 1.414 to get approximately the 4 barrel rating

There is a disparity , the 2 bbls are rated @ 3" vacuum
4 bbls are rated at 1.5" vacuum so the smaller 2 bbls do not flow as much as it would seem if compared to a 4 bbl so I have typically heard the 6 pack flows approx 900-950 CFM at 1.5" of vacuum

Yes, just jetted differently :2cents:

NOPE 440 carbs 6 pack will not fit on the 340 manifold.
Throttle plates are larger on 440.

Alpar still thinks that J heads only came on 340 6pack engines in 1970.   :screwy:

Could be a typo or E Booger correcting it to a real number that people would understand as the 2bbl carbs are rated differently as mentioned already.
