Fuel Tank "Insulator/Pad"?

A topic not talked about a lot.

Fuel Tank insulators/pads.
Is it felt tar paper? Rubber foam? Is it something that can be made?

And I assume the straps get something too?

I'm needing to purchase what ever is needed to insulate the tank on top and for the straps.

+1 for DMT, that's where I got mine.

Not sure what it was originally, but the repop ones are some sort of black closed cell foam, about 1/8" thick. You could probably make your own pretty easily.

The straps do not get any sort of padding.   Once that tank is cinched up I don't think it's going to move very easily.

question on the no insulation on straps I bought new straps and it came with 2 strips of insulation ?

It doesn't mean you CAN'T use them, it's just that the factory never did; that's all. If you like the idea and it's not a chalk mark resto, then go for it. Your car, your choice.

I just installed my fuel tank tonight and once the straps were snugged up tightly, I can see why strap insulators weren't used. There is no movement period. 
Kinda like the straps around the wooden barrels. Snug as a bug in a rug.

I spray undercoating on the inside or inside of the strap and let it dry real well then install the strap.  The tank will move when you have 160 lbs. of gas in there.  The undercoating will prevent it from shifting and scratching and you will never see the undercoating because it's on the inside.  Been doing it for 30 years and works great.

If I run across my original pad I'll post a picture of it.  It was definitely NOT a thin tar paper like material.  It was a thicker foam.  The factory must have changed it at some point.

Not a bad idea.
But the cuda gas tank shouldn't ever see 160 lbs. Around 108 completely full.

Oh, I saw it weighed 6.2 per gallon.

At 20 degrees C a gallon of gasoline weighs 6.07 to 6.15lbs. Water weighs 8.34 lbs per gallon.

Oh well, either way. It's more than I want to carry. 

But what you mentioned is a good idea.
I am using what Burdar mentioned. The foam pad.
