The night of the hemi cuda.
« on: March 28, 2014 - 10:24:08 PM »
In the spring of 2011 I got a brand new Camaro SS/RS six speed, it was silver with black stripes. By far one of the fastest cars I've ever had. So one night around July I think, I took the wife a kid to the local drag strip here in the Kansas City area(KCIR). The conditions were good for racing. It was about 75 or so and I was hooking good all night. Took out a few mustangs and some other stuff. About a hour or so later I see a super clean bronz 1970 cuda pull in. I had to talk to this guy! As I was walking up I saw the HEMI badges on the hood. My jaw dropped and I started talking to the guy and he told me It was the real deal! I was giddy because I've never seen a real one before. He tells me he got it out of Arkansas and he payed 30k for it and it was all original but a compleat basket case when he got it. So then I ask him"why did you have drag radials on it? your not going to run it....Are you?"" Oh ya, I'm gunna run it."  I took a good look under the hood. Looked stock to me. Still had iron heads and black valve covers. Well it looked stock anyway. So I hop back in my car and get in line opposite of him. After a few cars go I get my chance. So we pull out and do our burn outs and pull up to the line. In that I moment I felt honored to be In this cudas presence and honored to be able to race a real hemi cuda. I was thinking to my self I might have a good shot at taking this guy. It would be close. I had been in the mid to low 13's all day. That's about what a stock HEMI cuda would run I think. I had my eyes fixated on that tree. But all I could hear was that hemi at about 3000 rpm. That light turned green and I took off...1st then 2nd! I didn't see him at my side so I gave a quick glance in my mirror and saw him about 10 cars back with a big cloud of white smoke behind him. I thought to my self "wow, I got him" then I slammed it into 3rd. 3rd on an ls3 is where they start screaming. The finish line was seconds away now. Then out of no where this deafening roar came over me and that cuda came screaming past me like I was standing still. I was in shock. But I wasn't mad. No sir. Cudas should beat camaros. It was the way god intended. Well I knew one thing. That cuda had some work done. After the race he told me it was a 472 stroker with ported heads. So the moral of the story is just cause it looks stock don't mean it is.

You will my friend. Every other factory engine by any manufacturer pretty well lays down in high gear. The rpm's flatten out as soon as you hit high gear. They all pull hard in first and second, even the Hemi's. But when the others lay down in high gear, the Hemi's keep pulling strong. I have seen that many, many times. In fact, I have never seen and N/A-vs_N/A car of any brand pull away from a Hemi in high gear. Never.
Just think back TC to all the times you have run a car up through the gears, either auto or 4 speed. Think about how the revs build quickly in first, then you hit second and they still build quickly, then you hit high gear (in an automatic trans car), and you feel the pulling drop off and the rpm's plane out and flatten out. They still pull, but not nearly as hard as the lower gears. The Hemi's are not like that. They pull just as hard in high gear as they do in the lower gears. You can still fell then pulling hard and the rpm's keep building up at a rapid pace. You are going to enjoy it.....   :burnout:   :2thumbs:

Enjoy this little vid of a Hemi "A" body. Just listen to how it just keeps pulling when the driver hits high gear. That is what the Hemi's do that nothing else does.

:roflsmiley: That sounds like something that the old Yankees manager Yogi Bera would say! :roflsmiley:

I've only had one, but like Neil and Ken have said, once you get the rpm's up on her and those big "double-D" lungs really start breathing, she'll pull like a freight train! :burnout:

I get goosebumps just thinking about it! I'm excited for you Mike. I think the hardest thing is going to be learning self control. That deep breathing temptrest can have you doing things that a prudent person wouldn't :burnout: the same kind of things that will get the attention of Johnny Law. :dupe:
