65 cuda gear set changeout - need help
« on: April 15, 2005 - 10:32:35 AM »
I've got a 65 barracuda, 273 v8 and what i believe is a 2.67(?) gearset in the rear.  This is a great gear set to get groceries, drop the kids off at soccer and effectively get you ass handed to you on the drag strip.... soooo, I'd like to do a gearing switchout.  I've got the factory Hurst 4spd and would like to move up to high 3's.  I want to still be able to cruise it, but I also want to transfer some power to the ground.

I've never replaced a gear set, but have done tons of motor work.  Can anyone give me the basics?  And does anyone have a line on a gear set that would work for my cuda?

thanks,
leodavinci

on my site I have a bunch of "how -to on your differential " if you want to check them out they are here

http://sybertek.us/moparsa2e/viewforum.php?f=18
if you have trouble the addy is under my sig also

not knowing your car, I asume it is stock to stock optional. In which case you would prob want to go to 3.91 gears  so it stays long distance cruisable if that isnt  a prob I like 4:30 and 4:44(hard to find the 4:44 are ) lots of people think the 4:10-4:30 are a little low for the street (I runn 4:88 to 5:13 on street but I dont go far from town either with them )

I'll check your site out for sure... thanks.  This cuda is a weekend stoplight car with a couple of yearly 100-200 mile trips mixed in.  I'd rather have raw power and suffer the gas bill a little on highway trips.  I've heard people talking that the 3.55 is good, but that may be only for a large block, higher torque engine as well...

if it is the * 3/4 diff with the drop out front carrier , you need to remove the brake drums , undo the 5 bolts that holt the axle retainer , slide out the axles , drop the driveshaft & undo the 10 bolts holding the carrier & remove it with a jack , it is heavy , reverse the proceedure , & reset the axle end play , there is a threaded collar on the right axle you want to tighten it until there ios .008 -.018 end play

I am considering a change too so also am curious on others thoughts of the 3:55.
I have 3:23 now, and she kicks out pretty damn good, but who doesn;t want just a little more.
Town cruising, and like you said the rare 200 mile trip. 4:10 is to dreastic for my use.

Nope, not a forumla S, but looking to switch out intake manis to a 4bbl with a new holley, headers and dual ex.  It's completely cherry and completely stock at this point...

Just my 2cents but it needs American Racing center line look alike or a set of small bolt pattern rally's.

Hi CP,
I talked to our gear dude in town here, and explained I wanted to go from the 3:23 to the 3:55 and he said there would be so little difference it would not really even be noticeable. What do you think?
It is/will be used fo kicking around on the street here, and the odd 300 mile run (once a year)
