Go wing, Gull wing?
« on: March 31, 2014 - 03:33:22 PM »
Hello all,
I'm sure this debate/issue has been beating over and over, but thought I'd try to find the answer. :horse:

getting some final body work on the car before paint. my last dilemma is spoiler.
I like the look of a spoiler on a hardtop car (which this is)
I am hoping with this community full of knowledge that I can figure this out.

my problem is this:

I want the correct 71 spoiler style, (go or gull? what is difference and what is correct?)
where all 71 gull style and go was 70 and prior?
I also want to position spoiler in 70 location (farther back then 71)

so what do I need?
because of location of spoiler on lid I mocked up car and body work with current lid,
cutouts on lid are for 70, thought this would be fine
but will these cutouts allow mounting of a 71 style spoiler?

or are these cutouts only for 70 brackets placement or can 70 brackets be put in this place
but fasten a 71 spoiler through them?

do 71 brackets have a different pattern (not location on lid) but leg stud layout?

-the trunk lid I have matches and fits the car shape wise perfectly, gaps, depth and the skin is perfect,
however it is a 70 trunk lid With 70 style cutouts

-what is the differences, and what is correct go or gull for a 71

also I read and find out that 71 had the spoiler positioned farther forward then the rest,
(which I think looks terrible, and 70 location seems to match body lines better)

do I need different lid, or can a 71 style spoiler be put in 70 location on 70 lid with 70 brackets?

any  help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Sounds like he's hinting around a 71 car.  :dunno:

so it sounds like all 71 spoilers were gull wings, and earlier spoilers were go-wing (blockier shaped)

(this car is a 1971 cuda 340 /shaker hardtop)
I want the correct style spoiler but in the 70 lid location

what are the three bracket styles?

my main question is can a 71 Gull wing be bolted to in the 70 location with 70 brackets on a 70 lid

? 70 go wing to 71 gull wing ?
Are the pedestal legs in different position (width) on wing
Are the bolt layout different, size, location

The correct factory location is exactly the same on 1970 and 1971 Cudas.

1970 and 1971 Cudas use two different style brackets, but they mount to the trunk lid differently but are located in the same location. The four holes that mount the wing are in the same location from the factory on both 1970 and 1971 Cudas.

1970 and 1971 Challenger use the same bracket both years, but it's different then the Cuda brackets, therefore making three different style E Body brackets. :2cents:

why do places sell two different trunk lids with different locations of cutouts...

top 70 style and
bottom 71 style,
note different locations and style of cutouts..
even when comparing the brackets it definitely looks like the 70 spoiler would be mounted farther back,
I think I recall seeing some Y1 info stating something like 5 1nd 7/16 inches measured forward from rear for 70
and 8 1/8 inches measured forward for 71, I just want to figure this out so I know which parts to buy and so I can paint car.

I've been restoring Cudas and Challengers for over 30 years and I just learned something new today....very humbling. :worshippy

In my opinion, if you're putting an original type 71 spoiler on a 71 car, then you should use the correct 71 trunk lid and put it in the correct original location, otherwise it's going to look like "you" screwed up mounting it. :2cents:

I'm truely sorry for posting incorrect information in my above posts. :eek7:

I wonder if the wing support brackets on the two different styles are different since the mounting locations are different.
Does the 71 wing brackets slant more to the rear of the deck lid than the other?  :dunno:
