What is attached during body color painting?

Were these cars originally painted body color with the fenders attached, or were the fenders painted separately? 
How about hood and trunk lid?
Also, were the front suspensions and rear axles bolted up during painting?

All body panels were attached, nothing else .

So then the body (less fenders, header panel, latch support, and rear valance, hood, and trunk lid) is primed, then is painted with those pieces re-attached, or were the mating surfaces just spot primed and it's all done in one shot??

The cars were dipped in a primer about half way up with the doors and fenders on etc...Then the excess was wiped off, the exterior was prepped and painted. That's why you'll find bare metal under the headliner, door hinges, etc...

If you are going to wash the car with a hose or drive it in the rain I would paint every inch of the car. Primer does not do well over time when exposed to water.

Yeah it will be a driver, and we're going to do that.  Way too much invested to have it rust out in 10 years; it's a N.W. car too, we get a bit of rain up here

A trip to Krown or some other reputable rustproofer wouldn't be a bad idea, either. Sent from the land of snow and salt.
