26 written on firewall question?
« on: April 07, 2014 - 11:10:21 AM »
After I had my car soda blasted the number 26 is visible on the stripped metal [different shade] located the top left hand portion of the firewall. These numbers are approx. 3 inches high and hand written. I never noticed these numbers prior to having the car blasted mind you the car had been Ziebarted when new and later repainted several times. What I am wondering is was this 26 applied to the bare metal prior to the car being painted or was it written there after the car was painted. I am thinking of putting it back on my firewall but if that is incorrect I would like to know. Looking for restoration guru's opinion on this and by any chance if anyone knows what this 26 stood for. The car is a 70 440 six pack Challenger. Thanks

I would have to assume that the "26" on your firewall probably was meant to refer to a 26" radiator. As to whether it was put there before or after paint I will have to defer that question to one of the more experienced restoration gurus.

If it was written after the car was painted, there wouldn't be any trace of it once the car was blasted.  It would have been written before paint.  It sounds plausible that it meant 26" radiator but there is no way to know for sure.  My floor pan had a large three digit number written on it from the factory.  There is no way to know for sure what it stood for.  My guess is that it was the top part in a stack of floor pans.  Maybe the last three digits of the part #?

What I was thinking was, if this 26 was written with a wax type crayon on top of the paint that possibly it provided additional rust proofing explaining the different color of the blasted metal. This is a Canadian car and there was quite a bit of light surface rust on the firewall prior to the soda blast.

Hi Alan,

The picture i posted was of the same discription, but had T6, as in the colour of my car, and it was on the radiator support, so weird and wonderful things can be found everywhere on these cars...........

My barracuda had a large black dollar sign in black on the interior side of the RH wheel tub. Found it when I removed the interior.
