How to reduced steering extention/length?
« on: April 08, 2014 - 08:18:07 AM »
Hi guys,

The steering wheel is so close i feel like I'm in a NASCAR. Is thee any way to reduce the size of this extension housing? I have looked everywhere on line and cant seem to locate an extension that's not stock. I would like about a 2" piece but they don't seem to exist. Any tips?

I cant drive the car (properly) with the steering wheel so close....

What are your set ups?

Some Dodge trucks, Volare/Aspens and late 70's Chrysler 300's came with Tuff wheels and needed a short adapter.  I had one on my Ramcharger back in the day.  This is just the first one I came across.  I'm sure you can find them cheaper if you seek out truck or Volare parts.

Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?

Not much luck. Do you know if these can be cut and joined?

Is there any aftermarket crush can replacements that are around 2"? I'm lost...

They're metal, they can be cut and welded back together.  But now you're trusting the welder to know what they're doing and not end up with an unsafe or crooked steering wheel.

There are many other adapters out there if you can't find a factory one you like.  Here is one from Ididit:

Here is the two cans he was talking about.

Unfortunately the issue is because the steering wheel is moved so much, now on most E-body and even the Tuff Wheel, your knuckles will impact the leading edge of the dash.  That's been my issue.

This is an old thread but thought Id contribute.
I had the same problem, so I cut out the middle 5 or 6 ribs, and had the two halves welded back together. Then I just ground down the high spots, bondo filled the low spots, and primed, painted and done. Looks factory, but about half the length.
Just make sure you dont cut too short or your fingers will hit the dash, and hope you dont get in an accident, because a poorly welded can will break instead of "crush", and it could impale your chest.
Not a pretty thought.

Don't forget the indicator stalk will also need to be modified/straightened to clear the rim if it is moved closer to the dash. I have considered doing what Tommy did. I will check the pick a part yards first for shorter ones.

I forgot about that. I hand bent the lever carefully about one inch
