Tight clutch
« on: April 12, 2014 - 11:01:13 AM »
Apparently the new clutch I got is not allowing the trans to slide in. My buddy says that it is a really tight fit. Any ideas how to get them to mate?

you need to supply more info. If it were me I would pull it apart and see how easily the disc slides on the input, throwout bearing on shaft, how the input slides into the pilot, bell housing alignment

All the more info I have is that they have an extra input shaft that is extremely tight to get in the disc and the alignment tool is also really tight. If I were home with the car  this would be much easier

With the inspection  cover off you can back the bolts off the  clutch   then re align the disc with the alignment tool.

!. If the pilot bushing is dinged on the edge even a little, the input shaft won't slide in, so check that. (Don't ask me how I know)

2. Many people find it helpful to get some long bolts the same thread count as the tranny bolts.  Cut off the heads and thread them in to the bell housing.  They make lining up the trans a lot easier.  Then when you get the trans seated, replace the bolts with the real ones.

A judicious smear of Lubriplate on the input shaft splines wouldn't come amiss, either. Don't get crazy with it as it'll spin off and get where you don't want it to, but it's hard to get the shaft in a dry hole; ahem!

if the disc is offcenter it will not slide in sometimes you can get the clutch linkage connected & have some one inside the car depress the pedal slightly or if you can get close you can pull it in with long bolts but gently as you can damage the disc

He has an extra input shaft that he used to align the clutch and said it was extreemely tight to get in but it did go all the way in to the block. He can still get it in all the way but the trans won't go when it's up there. I don't suppose anyone is in the San Angelo Texas area that would be able to lend a hand is there.

Like Chryco said, You have to depress the clutch or pull the clutch fork back while installing the trans to get the clutch disk to move a little.

I have 3 e-body 4 speed cars and have never used an input or alignment shaft when installing my transmissions. AND I do this stuff by myself.
It would have been nice to have one, but I never used one.

I dont know why he is having so much trouble. I pulled and reinstalled the trans over and over again with no problem...but then again I had it on a lift too. Me and MOPARAL installed it laying on our backs in about 10 minutes too.  :misbehaving: :dunno:

So he finally pulled the clutch back out like i told him to and everything slid on easily. So he put the clutch back on the car and the trans slid right in. I'm pretty sure he didn't have the disc properly aligned before.

Now the car won't start though. Sounds to me like he isn't getting any spark. Has anyone done the auto to manual swap. Will you still get spark if the wires to the trans aren't plugged in?  I'm not sure what else he could have broke.

I've done a few and it sounds like you need a new guy!

The trans wires will now only go to the reverse lights and dash light. The center neutral start wire will go to your new clutch pedal switch to complete the starter solenoid circuit. He knocked one of your coil wires off or your distributor pickup got unplugged or is loose. (if you aren't getting spark)

I wasnt sure if the  clutch swith being unplugged would let it crank but not start or what. Ill have him check the coil and dist. The only thing i can think is that it is a spark problem the way that he is describing it. He said it turns over just fine but doesnt kick like it wants to start at all.

Definitly need a new guy. I thought he would be alright since I asked him if he was comfortable with all of this before I left. I need more mechanically inclined friends while I am away.
