70 Cuda 440-6
« on: April 13, 2014 - 01:07:01 PM »
My aunt has a 1970 Cuda 440-6, 4 Speed sitting in the barn and I am trying to get an idea of value. It is a true 440-6 cuda, 4 speed. The car is not numbers matching and has a 383 in it right now, and also comes with a 440. The car is complete but needs a complete restoration. The car needs new front fenders, body work, paint, all new interior. The car does not have any rust. I know this isn't much information, but do you guys have any idea or a rough estimate of what this car could be worth? Any opinions are greatly appreciated and thank you for your time.

Sean

Without pictures, this is a tough guess. I'm thinking 10-13K.   :dunno:

5 years ago I paid 18K for a 1970 matching  numbers 440U code, with 4-speed, dana 60 4.10 rear end, rallye gauges, rallye wheels, factory shaker hood and Super track pak.  It was basically in pieces.  It also needed a complete restoration and I ended up replacing the rear quarters, trunk floor pan and dutch-man panel. The rest of the car was very solid.  The engine and trans had been rebuilt in 1983 but never installed.  The dash cap had been redone along with all the seat covers and also not installed.  It had been in storage since 1983.  I know I paid top dollar for it, however it was matching numbers with a rebuilt engine, trans, and seat covers, etc..  I disassembled the engine just to make sure it had in fact been rebuilt and it had.  I will change the cam, check the crank/rod bearing tolerances and have hardened seats put in the heads before I install it.

Is the 440 that comes with your aunts car a date correct motor?  Also, you didn't say if the tri-power is included.  If you can answer yes to both of these, then I'd say it would be worth something similar to what I paid, considering what it will be worth when restored.  Not having the original engine will make a difference, but if it's date correct engine, while it will matter to purists, there are more that it will not make that much difference to as it's common to not have a matching numbers car now a days.  If it's not a date correct 440 and you don't have the tri-power than I agree with MEK, about 10-13Kdepending on condition.

Thank you for the replies. I will have to discuss with my dad what all is included with the car and if the engine is date correct and if the tripower is included. I may be able to take photos soon as well.

From what we know, the 440 engine is a date correct engine, and the tri-power is included. Hopefully pictures coming later this evening.

Turns out it will be a bigger project than my dad or I remembered. There is one area of rust behind the driver side rear wheel. The car is complete but not currently assembled. The tags were painted over and not legible. Attached are the numbers from the dash and 440 engine. Help deciphering would be greatly appreciated.

Again...a value depends on documentation and options. You need to get the fender tags off and cleaned up....They can be read better from the backside sometimes. Search for a broadcast sheet. Check the transmission for the matching VIN....

These details greatly increase the value. If it's an original shaker car, if it's an original 4spd car.....these questions would have to be answered in order to give an accurate estimate of value.

Keep in mind if it's something you want to buy and do a proper restoration on, it won't take long to spend more money then it's worth. :2cents:

Double check the body VIN codes (Radiator support and Cowl).  The dash VIN doesn't appear to have the factory rosettes, but it might just be hard to see in the little photos.   If you have a real shaker V code and the body VIN's match, you got yourself a real nice and valuable project.  If you're looking to sell, I'm a real buyer and will pay good money for it.  If you just need some help getting the project started and looking for direction, you came to the right place.  You will not find a better group of nice and honest guys then on this site.  Either way, good luck and let me know if I can help you.  I'll PM you my person cell phone.  Feel free to call if you need help.  I'm in Washington State.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.
