Challenger T/A exhaust tip Question
« on: April 15, 2014 - 03:47:03 PM »
On a Challenger T/A the exhaust tips hang from a hanger mounted to the inside of the rocker panel.

What is the correct hardware for mounting this hanger ?

I kind of thought that too....I restored an AAR a while back and that's all it had. I assumed at that time that it was just been monkeyed with....I thought maybe the factory T/A's had threaded weld nuts in the rocker and used machine thread bolts?

I will go out to the shop and take one out and see. I have never had the tips off. I know that my 71 vert has 3   1/4 in holes on the inside rocker on each side like the bracket for the T/A.

I will take some pics Wed. and post them. If you have a 1971 challenger chassis manual, look in the exhaust section and it shows the assembly diagram for the T/A  exhaust.

Sorry to just bust in, but these are off my TA. Hope they help. The bolts appear to be 1/4-20.

Those look the same as mine. Thanks for the pics.  Alan, I assumed nutserts because the rockers on my 71 had the holes and no nuts behind.   Maybe Mike will look at his since they are off.

Yea, I've seen plenty of rockers in my days with actually 5 holes in a semi-circle....I always thought they were for some type of drainage, they disappeared sometime in 1972...Now it's all starting to make sense...

I am pretty sure it is some sort of nutsert. The car is at the body shop and I'm not going to go see it until next week. If you can't find an answer by then I'll take a look.

My mistake. There are no nutserts, actually looks to be either nuts or a threaded plate that covers the three holes behind the rocker. Reason I say a plate is that I took a screwdriver and I could move the threaded item thru the holes and because the  three threaded parts were off center the holes just a bit.

I think your right ricky, I remember working on one years ago that had some rust issues and if my memory is right there was some kinda plate or the rocker was doubled up in that area or something like that.not 100% sure, memory is not what it used to be

The fastener guide shows the same bolts as above.  (6) 1/4-20 x .62" hex head SEMS bolts with paint cutter and pilot point.  Phosphate finish.  They have an EL with a circle around it on the head.

The fastener guide doesn't say anything about nuts or a retainer plate for the bolts.
