« on: April 16, 2014 - 06:00:23 PM »
I have a 73 Challenger with the 340 engine. Iam wanting to replace the old rusty headers. Can someone tell me the best brand, size, and performance that I should choose. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

"usraptr" = United States raptor - bird of prey = United States Bald Eagle.  FYI, somebody else thought of it first so I had to drop the "O" in raptor.

only 3 stay above the steering center link , TTI , Dougs  & Hooker 5115 , I would pick either of the first 2

Header advice ?  Always be on the receiving end :grinyes:

My preference is TTI for quality and fit. :2cents:

Why not the Hookers?

The 5115's have gotten decent reviews in some other posts, anyone had a bad experience? The price difference is enough to allow for some minor issues.... Edit: btw I was planning on wrapping the headers which would lower their lifespan anyway...

on a budget the hookers are OK , lighter materials poorer coatings etc , they will not last as long I prefer to spend a bit more the first time round & do the work once

Not too mention less potential hammering as the cheaper units seem to vary a lot in fit

I have a cheap brand of headers on my 340 now, rusted, low hanging and leaking. really don't like headers at all. But since I can not find any HP manifolds for 340, I ordered TTI's shorty headers, I will loose around 30 HP at 6000, but gain some tourqe around 2500 according to comparing tests I read. Fine with me, I'll get them in a few weeks. I used Hedman and Hookers before (on bigblocks though) they never seems to fit really well, gonna be interesting to see if TTI is as good as they say now.

Did you opt for polished, ceramic or nickel?  Thermal?  Are you replacing the entire exhaust?

I got the ceramic shortys, and I'm replacing the whole systen, 2,5" X-pipe system from TTI (not stainless) and Flowmaster mufflers.

I have the Hookers. They are an excellent fit.
NO figment issues. NO hammer needed.
They are the "Super Comp" line, not the regular Comp line that need a hammer. Unless you run a scattershed on your 4 spd manual trans. TTI even has a figment issue with the scattersheild. TTI suggests cutting the scattersheild.

The tubes are 1-3/4. Not 1-5/8. These headers are designed for a power house engine. With that said, there will be a slight reduction in low end torque next to the other two headers. Doug's being a 1-5/8 tube start to finish and the TTI's stepping up from 1-5/8 to a 1-3/4 tube after a few inches.

I do not know how coats Hooker Headers. Should there be a problem, blame the coater. The coatings are rated to 1600*'s except there "Dark side" coat which is 1700*'s.

I just received my second set from Summit racing for $475, painted, not coated for my '79 Dodge Magnum. Fitment was perfect with the 727.
No hammer needed!

The only thing I do not like is how close the tunes are to the oil filter. A remote filter relocation set up will be used for easier oil changes and keeping the header clean of oil spillage during changes. Also as not to bake the oil filter while running. Nonsense of baking the oil filter and heating up the oil within.

I'll try and post a picture with my I-phone.

Considering the build of "MY engine" I am sooooo not worried about the small and minor loss of torque at low RPM. The cam size alone, while not large, basically isn't making power there. Along with the single plane, 750 carb, 4.10 gears etc..... You get the idea right?
