727 front clutch
« on: April 17, 2014 - 09:14:58 PM »
I am rebuilding the trans for my 70 u code with the factory manual.
Every this is going well but I have a question about the front clutch clearance.
The manual says .066 to .123 for the 440 hp, all the other engine types have a tighter lower tolerance. Is the .066 right or should I get it tighter?
I have an assortment of plates and snap rings and I want to get it to the lowest spec I can.

It depends on the clutch brand. Raybestos suggests .008-.012 per disc. I use the red racing from crt or coan when I built mine, I have a TCS 7 clutch direct think I used .060 total, rear-forward hemi drum (2nd) I've got 5 disc with about .040 total. The kickdown lever is a 4.2:1. T/A cheetah rmvb.  The only thing is you have to get the correct timing between the lever and clearances from 2nd to 3rd. Mine shifts firmly. I went with the tighter ratio due to burn in. I've got a 493CU 440 in front of my 727. hope this helps.
