Watched the youtube video and it talked about watching the wear pattern on the rockers/valve tips.

Valve stem tips look ok overall, one valve is slightly offcentered...the one for the affected spring looks fine to me...nothing standing out and yelling "problem" to me but I do not have a trained eye.....pictures not working well....but posting anyways

Relatively easy job. Install new seals while Springs are off.  If the car did not have a bad/big loping idle then assume it was one of the smaller purple cams. Check the spring specs that Mopar shows and buy something equivalent

It definately has a rough/lopey idle.....folks always tell me how it sounds like it has a big cam in it....had to go with a higher rpm stall converter to get her to idle and such....low vacuum at idle too.....

Did this engine ever sit not running for an extended period of time, a year or more? I've heard of instances of a spring fatiguing from sitting compressed for a long time. Just another thought to ponder. Either way I would replace all the springs as a set.   :2cents:

Well, I cant say about it sitting before I got it.....that was 4 years ago.  I run it all the time....even a few times in the winter when the roads are clean.

Would sound pretty bad and need a higher stall converter in a 318

I found a mopar chart on their site that lists all the current purple cams....

Found that (some?) Mopar Performance valve springs are red, and look like mine.  I swear I can see "something" beyond the dampeners in mine thouggh....look at the next to the rear spring in my wide shot in my first post....I see the red spring, the brownish dampener and then a black something or other......maybe these are double springs with the dampener?

maybe...like I said, I am not familiar with this.......I thought the seals would have been "shorter".....I guess I will know when I pull it eh?  LOL

I found a you tube video where they were installing "heavy duty" springs on a toyota engine and they were red too,.,,,,,,,dammit.   So I guess the red is not peculiar to mopar.

Could be the next one up too.......or even one more above.   

The ".430/.500 lift" on the JEGS springs -- that is a RANGE right? To cover a cam with lift of that range?

That's a factory style seal. It rides up and down with the valve stem. A double spring would require machining to fit the spring and a positive stop seal.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I like the Valve spring tool from Mancini , use air pressure or nylon rope in the cylinder to hold the valve closed & bolt the tool to the rocker pedestals & it levers down on the top of the retainer , easy to use . With a dial indicator you can measure the cam lift & maybe determine what cam you have , I would use a slightly overkill spring than something marginal for spring pressure , Lunati cams have a fast ramp & require more pressure even for the same lift to keep the valve train stable , it is possible that the spring hit a harmonic or could not keep the valve train tight & bounced causing the failure .
