Wheel width/tire diameter ?'s
« on: April 20, 2014 - 04:15:22 AM »
I'm hoping to buy some 17" year one rallye wheels very shortly.  After reading many posts here it seems like most people are running 17x8 in front, but I've seen a few suggest 17x9 will work with say a 255/45/17 tire (26" dia.), without front end modification.  I believe the 17x9's have 5" backspacing.

Before pulling the trigger on that combo though I would really appreciate hearing if are there more of you out there who have successfully done this on a stock front end or if there's any reason to be concerned it could cause a problem?  I just want to know the possibilities of what I might be in for :feedback:

For the back, with a stock ebody rearend would a 275/50/17 tire (27.8" dia.) fit without headaches, or is that too tall?  I've seen that several have used 275/40/17 but I'm hoping to get just a little more sidewall height, if possible.

The front is the tight fit.  On my challenger, the largest that's going to go in there is a 26" tall tire and 275mm wide (aka the 275/40 17 on a 17x9 w/ 5" bs).  It rubs with the fast ratio arms on the frame on full lock, barely.  I didn't have the issue before going to the fast ratio arms.  The rear has much more room.  Especially to go taller.  I run a square setup for a variety of reasons, but a 28" tall 275 tire (like a 275/60 15) fits.  It should stand to reason that a 275/50 17 on a 17x9 w/ 5" BS would fit.  My suspension layout is stock.  Stiffening up the suspension helped with fender rubbing on the front.  That includes the rear sway bar.  A softer suspension may require your 255/45 17, but a 245/45 is a safe bet.

Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it!  Eventually I would like to upgrade to the fast ratio arms and disk brakes.  But it sounds like at least the 17x9's should work all around, hopefully with 255/45's on front.

I finally got the bright idea to measure the clearances based on what I have on the car now  :thinkerg:

The tires are 245/60/14 all around with what looks to be a fair amount of sidewall 'bulging'.  On the front I have about 1.5 - 1.75" from the tire to the inside of the fender.  On the rear I have about 1.75" to the fender on the drivers side and 2" to the fender on the passenger.  From the tire to the rear leaf springs I have just barely over 1".  What I don't know is the width or backspacing of the stock 14" rallye wheels.

Having measured this out, do these clearances sound about right or would any of the options I mentioned above be too tight??

I have 17x9 wheels with Nitto NT05 255/45/17 rubber. The front is lower than stock, I had to replace the lower control arm bumpers because they were touching at rest. 5" backspacing works perfectly for me. No rubs at all.
I would not be afraid of buying the 17x9's.

Thanks for the info.  Couple questions about your setup:  Is there a benefit to running a 255 on an 9" vs 8" or is it more so you could potentially use an even larger tire the 9" in the future if you choose?  Also, what is your ride height?  Right now with my 245/60/14's its just under 23" to the top of the wheel well.  Looks like my bumpers are pretty close to touching too  :o.  I could stand to bring my front up a little, but I do like that lowered look...

I got the 9" because Nitto said not to put the 255/45's on an 8" wheel. As for ride height, I can't help you right now, my car is up on stands with the front fenders removed.
I think they look better lower than stock as well. And they corner better. I have to be careful around speed bumps though.  ::)

Agree on the ride height.  Interesting about the Nitto's, I've been looking at some other 255/45's and the recommendations are 8-9"...

I had a chance to take one of the existing 245/60/14's off the rear today.  Measure just under 4" backspace.

Then with that wheel off I measured from the face of the drum to the leaf ~14" back from the center of the drum, and I got just about 6" which is encouraging and consistent with many people here fitting a 275 on the back.

But I'm a little puzzled as to why when I measured earlier from the tire to the leaf I got only 1" on a wheel with 4" of backspace.  If that measurement was right, any tire on a wheel with 5" of backspace would not fit.  Am I thinking about this wrong??   :clueless:

I have 275/40/17's on my Challenger with 17x9's with 5" backspace. No rubbing on the frame, but I did have to remove the fender braces when I was running the car at 23" at the top of the wheel opening to the ground because it would rub under compression with the wheels turned. I also partially rolled my passenger fender lip, and run -.9º camber to keep it off the passenger fender lip. Not sure why I had issues with that side, but I did. No issues at all on the driver's side. Currently I run the car closer to 23.5" from the ground to the top of the wheel opening, but that's just because of header clearance. Too many speed bumps around here, and I got tired of crawling over them at a 45º angle at 3mph.

I'd say 275/40/17 is as big as you can go in the front. Body tolerances on these cars vary a bit, so it may be easier for some folks to run that size and harder for others. Although it took some fiddling, I haven't had any rubbing since I went with a bit more camber. I also run 1.12" torsion bars, Hotchkis UCA's, adjustable strut rods, and 11.75" rotors. Haven't had any clearance issues in close to 30k miles, my Challenger has been my daily for 6 years now and I've had that rim/tire set up on there since 2011.

As far as the 255/45/17's, they'd be a safer bet for sure. I doubt you'd have any issues at all with the exception of the fender braces if you're running that low. I'd still run them on a 9" rim, that way you can always upsize later. Plus, most 255/45/17's have a section width of ~10" and a tread width of 9", so they'd be a little squeezed on an 8" rim. Some are even wider than that, the specs vary quite a bit with manufacturer and tire model. Not saying you couldn't run them on an 8" rim, quite a few of the tire manufacturers say you can, but a 9" rim would probably be a better fit.

I run 17 x 8 with 4 1/2" BS with 255/45/17 on the front and 17 x  9 with 5" BS with 285/40/17's on the rear.  Zero problems.

Sorry, I just checked and my front tires are 255/40/17's, not 45's.

Well I never imagined the amount of energy and research this decision would take... :faint:

But based on all your great feedback and more hours reading posts on this site than I'll ever admit to anyone, I'm thinking I'd rather try to squeeze more tire HEIGHT than tire width.  Both for look of filling up the wheel well and driving feel.  If I can run a taller tire with a 255 width than I can in a 275, I don't think its worth trying to eek out another 0.75" or width at that point...  Just my personal preference.  And it does sound like I could run a taller 275 on back but I would also like to have relatively similar height from front to back...  Again, a personal preference.

So, at this point I'm thinking 255/50/17 (27" tall) on back, 255/45/17 (26" tall) on front.  With that size combo it looks like the reasonably priced options are the Nitto NT555's or Kumho Ecsta SPT.  I know the Nitto's are pretty popular but I haven't really seen anyone discuss the Kumho's.  Any thoughts about that comparison?  The Nitto’s also seem to have a relatively low weight rating but also I’m not sure how important that is.

How much you gonna put in the trunk?  :roflsmiley:
I don't have the 555's, but a couple people I know like them.

Tall tire fits on the back of my Barracuda. I've got 28.5" tall 295/45/18s on the back of mine with stock wells/axle housing. I'd keep it tall for aesthetics.

I have 555's, they're old now, but haven't given me any trouble.
