2 Carbs
« on: April 20, 2014 - 11:20:06 AM »
The forum consensus seems to be QuickFuel or Proform.
I'm looking for an 850 mechanical secondary carb so I've narrowed it down to a QuickFuel Black Diamond QFT-BD-850 or the Proform PRO-67201
The QFT has a choke, proform doesn't. Other than that, any advantages of one over the other? I don't know enough about carbs to know which
is better for me
Car is a 440, 4 sp, 3.55 gears, street car, never seen a track. Has a lunati 703 cam, stealth heads, performer rpm intake.

if you drive in cold weather, I would prefer the choke but others will tell you to be patient and let it warm up first  :D

That's really what it boils down to.

I had a non-choke carb for a short period of time. I ran out of patience waiting for it to warm up.

On my 850, cut the choke tower off, and is still pretty easy to start
and get goin down the road.  Just have to have everything else dialed in.

I have a choke and I don't think I would want to be without it. You live a LOT farther north than me so I think it's a no-brainer.

A lot of guys on here like to fiddle around with their carbs. It also seems like there is a lot of setting issues with Holley and some of the others and if you want to play with it that's fine. I don't know a lot about them. I have an Edelbrock. Set it and run it. It got set up when we redid the engine and I haven't touched it since. It starts great and runs great. I have friends that feel the same way. So maybe it comes down to what type of guy you are. Do you want to play around the carb or just set it and forget it?

Typically I found that as long as the car is driven on nicer days you have to play with the throttle for approx. 5 mins & it will idle fine after that without the choke , choke can help cold starts obviously but can also waste fuel & foul plugs if they are on for too long ,

Thanks for the feedback!
So except for the choke there isn't really any significant difference between the two?
More or less the same carb with different branding/colour?

Quickfuel and Proform are virtually identical using the same parts...which ever is cheapest would be the best deal, I think.

my Quickfuel does not have a choke . Works great for me!  :2thumbs: I find a choke unnecessary as I don't drive it when cold anyhow. I do start it up now and then in the winter just to keep things oiled up.

If its real cold, and don't have a choke, put a hairdryer on the intake
for about 15 minutes.  Gets it nice and warm, and startup is easy
because the fuel is atomized better, than it would be if intake
is cold.

And then had a last minute change of mind and bought the Quick Fuel BD-850
