The only difference is 3 little words that start with the letters EPA. Get rid of those 3 horrible little words and you can have a really great factory engine or you can buy a crate engine from Jegs, etc and not worry about those 3 horrible little words !  :D

As an example..... I farm for a living and a few years ago I had a John Deere 9200 4-wheel drive tractor that's rated at 310hp. I had seen an ad that Thoroughbred Diesel sold a chip for the tractor that would give it 65 more hp and it would use less fuel. I called the tech line and asked how that was possible. They said "Get rid of anything that the EPA regulates and you would be amazed what can be done". I bought the chip and it did give the promised hp and I was able to stay in the field for 3 1/2hr more.

Chips are awesome. I run them on my combines. But they only work on electronically controlled engines.

The Chips for Mopars do not do much , the factory has them set up pretty well , often just swapping the thermostat to a cooler one will gain more Hp & for only $12 or so

I've heard this said before. Can you explain the theory behind it, and why it works? I'm not even sure what thermostat these cars have from the factory now.

Engine runs cooler, so ECM allows more fuel than it would if engine was hotter.

OK. So if my car had an 180 thermostat from the factory for instance, what way would be cooler? Putting in a 195, or going the other way with a 160?

Cooler would be 160, but 180 seems pretty close to optimum from what I have seen on the dyno while minimizing wear

Thanks for the clarification.

I just wasn't sure. If I went to a 195, then the engine would be colder longer before the thermostat opened. So I was confused on which way to go.   :grinyes:

most of the ones I have seen had 195 or 200 T stats for emissions , 180 is the swap to for more power

To run a 180 T Stat you will need a Diablo tuner to adjust the fan settings to come on at a lower temp. If you do not do this the engine will still run at the high temp although it will take longer to reach it.
As for the Mopar crate engines you are paying x2 more and less power then what the aftermarket companies can offer you.

I did order a tuner and a 180* thermostat.

Thanks for the advice!   :2thumbs:
