Ugly gap under the rear bumper
« on: April 29, 2014 - 10:24:29 PM »
I have noticed others with the same ugly gap between the bumper and the valance. This is a 73 with the 70-71 style bumper and brackets. What can be done to clean this up, besides more body work. Anyone have a simple fix to clean it up? :feedback:

That's normal. I think the easiest thing would be to spray that upper lip with SEM Trim Black. That would help hide the area. Kind of like how the factory sprayed the rocker pinch weld.

I fit and welded small pieces of metal in the gaps. But I like Burdar's suggestion. I think I'll do that as well. Probably with plasti-dip.

I just had the bumper off, while i was blacking out the tail panel. I wish i would have thought about that at that time. Maybe i can tape things off well enough to reach in their with a small brush or spray can.

I think your gap is more obvious because you removed the bumper guards :2cents:

Install the chrome exhaust tips to take away from it.

After i get this thing on the road, i think my next project will be to emote the rear valence and weld on a filler piece that will go up too or tuck under the bumper.

Great information.  Thank you.  When we get prep finished on my Challenger there will be some SIM Black going on, including pinch welds.

Personally I think painting it black is gonna draw attention to the area... Black works on the pinch weld cause it's already a dark area, adjust the bumper down on it's mounts a little & keep the back of the car relatively low, no one ever notices it unless they are lower than the car...

Cudas have the same issue, exposed bolts, etc. when looking from a lower angle
I agree its all about adjusting the bumper down. Wont fix it but it helps.

If you adjust the bumper down, then you increase the gap on the top side.  I'd be more concerned with the gap between the bumper and the tail panel.  That's what you see the most.  The gap below the bumper should be shaded too.  I don't think painting it black would make it stand out.  Spraying it with PlastiDip is a good idea.  If it does make it look worse, you can peal it off.

I just hung the bumpers on my Challenger. You're pretty much stuck centering them in the middle of the openings on the end of the quarter. Any up or down there is going to luck funny.
