Proper Octane
« on: April 30, 2014 - 01:48:31 PM »
When I rebuilt my 383 30 years ago I made it high compression. 100 octane was cheap back then. Well today it ain't cheap. 7 bucks a gallon.  My question is if I fill my 18 gallon tank with 93 pump gas, how much octane additive do I need to add to get it to 100 octane? What brand of octane boost should I use?

Here is the mixture calculator I use. It works pretty well. I mix VP C16 with 93 octane to the ratios shown to get the desired amount of gallons. It is way cheaper than running straight race gas. it cuts the race gas usage way down and makes it more affordable. I bought a drum of C16 which is 116 octane for about $700.00 and then mix it with pump gas. I only need 95 octane, so the race gas goes a long way and in a year, I have only used about 20 gallons of the VP fuel.

Easy to use calculator.

what is your compression ratio?
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

A typical additive won't generally get you to where you want to be. You need (as Oldschool pointed out), either a higher octane
rated fuel to "dilute" into the lower octane rated fuel or something like Torco additive which is a highly concentrated fuel. Either
way will get you to your goal for a cheaper price than straight 100 octane fuel. But don't be fooled into thinking that
you can just add cheap octane booster from autozone and get the desired effect.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

The great thing about the VP C16 is that it will actually blend with the pump gas. Some race type fuels will not blend with pump gas and that won't work.  Some will separate like water and oil because they are chemically so dis-similar. VP blends perfectly...

Well if memory serves me right 11.5 to 11.75. Its been awhile but last time (15 years ago) that I tried to run pump 95 it got real hot and started pinging. Used 100 ever since and no problems.

Alum heads would probably make it livable on 93 octane with maybe a bit of additive / mixing
