340 six pack idle stop solenoid
« on: April 30, 2014 - 09:42:50 PM »
Has anyone come up with a replacement  idle stop solenoid. Im not worried about numbers matching. I have seen the 440 solenoids have thought about trying one. Im just not sure if it physically will fit.

72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

Wow 375 is somewhat of a rip.

You can rebuild them as directions can be found on the interwebs...

The reason why the OEM idle solenoids are going for big money is because they work.

The reproductions do not have enough windings inside to kick up the throttle like they're supposed to do.

They are re-buildable and I know Scott at Harms has done them. He did a great article before on the differences of OEM vs. the repro's.

Perhaps they can be modified to work like OEM?

To help out I am working on an original non numbers matching AAR cuda. I bought this one because i wanted a nice driver not show car that I intend to drive and autox mabe trackday.Something like the Hotchkis Challenger. I am working out all the bugs and making minor repairs before more serious mods. As per most of these cars the solenoid was missing. I need it it as I cant set the idle where I want it as it does run on. So I have found a replacement non numbers that I will give a try. Thanks for the replys they have been helpful.

Since you are not talking numbers matching then you could either buy the megaparts one or get it rebuilt by Mr. Harms. I believe he was charging like $100 bucks or thereabouts to do a rebuild.

Interestingly, my T/A didn't have the solenoid when I bought it.

I have a 1990 issue of Car Collector featuring my actual car when it was owned over in Florida.

here in this pic of the engine, it didn't have one back then too.

Any thoughts on this ?
Had no problem idling before the rebuild

There's nothing original looking about the engine in that photo...so somebody most likely tossed the solenoid along the way :2cents:

I got my solenoid at Year One for $99. As stated it doesn't have the force to lift the throttle, but key on, step on the throttle to set the choke and start. It will pop out and hold the idle speed. When the key is turned off, down it goes and no run on. I have the idle screw backed way out. My idle is about 950 rpm @ 190 deg. 440-6 pack. This should work nicely for you as well.
