When you started the engine, 2-3 liters of the oil got pumped into the converter and stayed there leaving very little in the pan. Always check fluid level with the engine idling in neutral.

I agree have you checked the fluid with the car warmed up and idling in neutral??

Oil level ok. I even tried putting more in, though running in neutral, its a couple of cm above the top mark on the dipstick now. If anything, it's got maybe abit too much oil.

Maybe the torque converter needed more oil..? I filled that up untill it seemed to come back out when I put it in upright position.

Still very noticeable. It's needs high rpm to pull, especially uphill where it still seems to have way too much 'clutch'.

Way I see it, has to be one of three things.

*Torque converter problem somehow. I think I'll go for a 2000-2300rpm Converter or 1800-2100rpm.
*Kickdown adjustment - I've set kick down to be at max when throttle is pushed to max.
*Slapstick adjustment. Maybe it's not properly in gear. Everything seems normal. P is ok, R is ok, N is ok, D seems ok it does gear, so I don't know. Is it either or with those? If it gears, its ok? One cant put that slightly out of sync?

Other than that I haven't done anything to the transmission apart from draining it and changing the oilfilter and pan. Oil is Dexron 3 Automatic fluid.

Did you follow any instruction when doing this?.... doesn't sound right.

I just googled it, and that was in a forum post somewhere. When throttle was max, kickdown should also be max it said.

Not what it says in the factory service manual..this is my abbreviated version, I'll copy the full article if you like

From the Service Manual (short version)
Kickdown band adjustment  loosen jamb nut, run in adjuster then back out 2 1/2 turns.
Linkage adjustment... With choke disconnected or held open have someone hold the kickdown lever on the tranny all the way forward (or make tool with spring to hold). Loosen kickdown lever adjustment bolt, holding the lever back, adjust the slotted bar forward till is in contact with the carb. stud.

How high of rpms are you talking about? Kickdown linkage adjustment won't make it feel like it's slipping on take off and hills. I would try another filter first. Maybe your new one isn't flowing enough oil for some reason. If that doesn't fix it and you're positive the fluid level is full, I'd say there's a problem with the new converter. Remember, "new" doesn't always mean "good".

Maybe you broke the front pump gear when you installed the torque converter.
