PCV Oil Separator Update
« on: May 05, 2014 - 12:06:15 AM »
Rigged up an oil separator, and put it on my PCV line. The line is 3/8 inch,
and to make the diameter smaller, I also put a section of 1/4 inch vacuum tubing
inside the 3/8 inch line, held tight by a hose clamp.  Have driven about 100 miles
in the last two months, and tonight I pulled the drain cap off the bottom of the
separator, and got about 3 tablespoons of oil. So, my PCV system is still sucking oil
from under the vavle cover, even though I have a baffle in the valve cover.  I probably
would have had more oil in the separator if the line was an open 3/8 inch.

So, I would recommend an oil separator on your PCV line, to keep the oil from
mucking up your intake manifold, valves, and the rest.

I'm planning on putting one on my Dart.  The biggest problem will be designing it to look good and not cobbled together.  The factory plastic PCV valves aren't very attractive.  I wonder what Ford and Chevy PCV valves look like?  Does the aftermarket make a PCV valve that's housed inside something that looks like a chrome breather?  That would be ideal.

Since it's crankcase ventilation, would think the line could tap into anywhere
on the crankcase.  Not sure why it has to be on the valve cover at all?

I did some searching and there are PCV valves inside breather housings.  There are a bunch of them on E-bay.  From what I've seen so far, the PCV valves used inside them are replaceable too.
