from 3.73 to 3.23?
« on: May 05, 2014 - 09:04:54 PM »
Hello,

Last fall I bought a 73 Challenger with a 340 and automatic transmission. The previous owner put a 3.73 in the rear.

Would going from that 3.73 back to a 3.23 be a *very* significant performance drop? How about fuel consumption?

Thanks

Yes it will be significant , you can calculate the RPM change here http://vexer.com/automotive-tools/speed-rpm-calculator
the response will suffer as the E body is relatively heavy & the 340 is not a torque monster but loves RPM but milage will definatly improve the best of both worlds is an OD trans such as the 518

Can the mods sticky that link somewhere? That's really cool.

I found it. It is "stickied" in the "Suspension, Wheels/Tires and Brakes" section.

Hello,

Thanks for that great link, but it's hard to believe there's only a 500 RPM difference between 3.73 and 3.23 at 70mph.

And yes, an OD tranny would be best! Maybe next year's project!
