Shroud usually critical for effective cooling.
1/8 inch hole is not a biggee, and helps vent system during filling.
Increase you idle which increases coolant pump flowrate.
engine compartment cannot be tight (air flow wise), or it increses back pressure to reduce airflow through radiator.
I took off flaps over wheels, and have a vented hood.
A larger fan/fans that pulls 2500+ cfm will help.
make sure timing is not too advanced
