Hood to Cowl Seal question
« on: May 12, 2014 - 04:14:22 PM »
Greetings Gents,

I recently purchased a lot of parts for my 1973 Cuda.  One of things I bought was a new Cowl to Hood seal complete with clips.  Well, when I opened the package the clips were not attached to the seal.  The clips are shaped in the form of the letter "M" with small barbs on some of the edges.  The problem is that I have no idea how these clips are installed much less how they grip the seal.  Can anyone provide a picture of how the clips are attached to the seal as well as to the slots in the cowl?   It would be a great help.  Also, the seal has one flat side and the other is slightly curved.  I'm assuming that the flat side of the seal is the one that goes down against the cowl.   Am I right about this part anyway?  PO removed and never replaced parts like this so I have to rely on the good folks here to get it right.  It gets a little pricey when you try to install stuff the wrong way and end up messing up your parts.  Thanks for any help.

The M clips slide under the holes shown in the picture. The cowl seal itself kinda sits on it's side and not straight up like I had thought.

HP, Thanks for the pics but I'm still stumped about how the seal is held by the clips.  Do you install the clips on the cowl then attach the seal to clips?  Are they crimped on or are you supposed to
slide the seal under the clip?   Thanks again.

My cowl seal already had the clips installed on them.

Cowl seal to clips, then clip down to the cowl is the right order.

The little pointy sharp things on the clips are supposed to pierce the rubber and bend over...It's a real pain in the arse...I walways buy ones with the clips installed :2cents:

If your original one is in good shape, clean it and reuse it.  The repros suck!  The original ones had some height to them and actually sealed the hood to the cowl.  The repros are thin an flimsy.  They don't do a thing.  They are already compressed right out of the package.

Sorry, I've been busy installing my tail light harness.  Thanks for the info.  See I don't have the old seal to go on as a guide.  PO left it off.  I was wondering about the sharp points and figured they must come into play in some fashion to hold the seal.  I did not realize that that some came with the clips installed.   Mine is from Soft Seal and there were no instructions.   Go figure.   Oh well, I will play with it tomorrow and see what happens.   Thanks again for the info.

Thanks for the info anlauto but its a little late.   I forget which vendor I bought my seal at but it just showed the seal and stated that it came with clips.  It neither stated who the manufacture was or state that the clips were not already attached.    Live and learn.  Thanks.

Yup.  I really didn't want to, but had to buy their A-piller post seals for my '70 Challenger convertible.  If Metro had made them, I would have gone that route.

Well guys, you were right.  Buy the seal with the clips attached.   I gave it the ole college try and after about 45 minutes trying to attach just one of the stupid clips I had to give it up.   This is not going to work.  Sooooooo, the question is who sells this cowl seal with the clips attached?????  Thanks for the response.
