What tools do you keep in your ride, if any?
« on: May 13, 2014 - 08:36:41 AM »
Was thinking about when I get my car road worthy, might not be a bad idea to keep some tools around for that "just in case"  scenerio.
So now I'm curious as to what members do here.
Besides the jack and tire iron...

Do you haul a tool bag? Small tool box? Individual tools? None?

I'm thinking a few tools wouldn't be a bad idea, especially after being totally stripped and put back together again.

There's this old thread as a start. It may or may not cover everything or may need updating.

The only time I keep tools in my car is for a distance trip.  Most of the time I am local and a phone call will supply pretty much anything I need.

I carry a small plastic case that has most sizes in 1/4".
A couple vice grips
One crescent wrench
a full roll of gorilla tape
a couple rubber gloves (these have been very helpful over the years, not just for wearing) They make good gaskets, plugs, straps, etc.
bailing wire
And I always have my dewalt impact with charged batteries in the trunk.  That case has been invaluable over the years.
It has 3/8 sockets, screws, a few drill bits, magnet, random small tools.

OH, and a gun.  Special tools for special reasons.

Here in rural Colorado if I get broken down, I could be there a looong time.   no phone service in most places out here in the mountains.

I didn't mention that I always have a beanie hat,  carhart thermal overalls, and an extra carhart jacket.

All this fits into two small bags.

Good advice.

Besides the above, I always drove with my big tool box in the trunk. It saved me from getting towed a few times for minor issues. I also kept a multi-meter in my trunk, that saved me once too.

So I once had a fuel pump die, and a torque converter seal let go on me...So they were my 2 tows.

Some good ideas out there and thank you for sharing.
The cell phone obviously is a must but for minor quick fixes, I see a small tool bag/box a "good to have" thing.

I always kept nothing till last year when a valve cover gasket decided it's life was over at a local car show, I was forced to buy a small ratchet set and since then it has lived its life in the back of my car. I also carry extra oil and a coolant jug full of water.

However for a spin around my area just for some therapy miles I don't bring anything.

A multi tip screwdriver, small crescent wrench, channel locks, electrical tape, and one small standard tip screwdriver for carb adjustment (My old 750 holley was temperamental). I feel better if I have a couple tools available. :)
