883 4 speed issues

ok guys and gals.. I have a rebuilt 23 spline 4 speed from brewers...and having some issues..i will have to call them in the morning to see what fun we are going to have!...what I'm wondering is, we have a fluid leak in the front trans/bell erea , def gear lube!... my mechanic and I believe its coming from the cross shaft seal/plug...anyone know is this replaced from the front outside or is this gonna have to be disassembled?...I'm hoping maybe we can do this without sending this thing back?..i do not want to say anymore till I talk with brewers in the morning..but would like to know about the countershaft... thanks guys!

and almost forgot yes we have the correct gearlube..purchased from them!..thanks

If the front pinion retainer snap ring is too thick it will lift the retainer away from the case so it could leak there .
 the alum case 833 uses a domed cap that you hit with a hammer to expand , the iron case has an interference fit pin that sits tight in the case , so you could slide the trans back , clean it with brake fluid & fill the cavity with ultra grey or black silicone .

Could be leaking from the front bearing retainer seal.  A trans. I bought from Brewers leaked from there.  If it is leaking from there, you can take the inspection cover off and you'll be able to see it coming out of the weep hole thats on the face of the bearing retainer.

hey 7d, thanks for the reply..we have pulled the inspection cover  and its dry as a bone up there... I'm hoping to be able to make a repair without sending it all the way back to ohio...

Im with ya on that.  Brewers sent me a new bearing retainer with a new seal already installed so it saved me from having to send mine back.....but did obviously have to go through the hassle of pulling and reinstalling trans.

Wayne and the folks at Brewers have great customer service...Im sure they will work with you to solve the problem whatever it turns out to be.

pulled out the trans last night.  not a good time, as we had to remove the brand new exhaust we just put on...both bell and front of trans are wet about an inch up...retainer erea bone dry...only one thing in the wet erea ..countershaft! wtf...we are not having fun and its starting to get pretty expensive having my mechanic jacking around with all this...so I guess I will call brewers again and see about sending this back...well so much for taking this on the power tour!..i guess the most disappointing thing is trying to cover all the bases on this 3-4sp swap and finally pulling the plug spending the money on all the right stuff...only to have even more aggravation!...   rant over

well it seems we have a porous casting..argh...we are shipping it back.. I was hoping that we wouldn't have to but that's way its been going lately....last week I had a alum. intake that caused me alllll kinds of grief on a sbc..that was cracked in the exhaust cross over.....this kind of stuff makes new cars look better!  ahhhh  maybe

well finally got this back together.. runs and drives great!!...brewers replaced the case....shifts very nice...my hats off to them!..
