Sealing Header Bolts
« on: May 20, 2014 - 09:51:25 PM »
Ok, I just got done test running my 340; breaking in the cam, 25 minutes at 2000 rpm, with some excursions to 2500 for a minute. Everything worked fine but two things; one; I used Permatex non hardening stuff on the outside header bolts (they go into water); they hissed water the whole time, so I think I should be using some other kind of sealer. What do you experts recommend?
The only other issue is that my new fuel pump leaked around the fitting (not in the fitting) so it was made on Monday. It is a new one but I forgot where I got it.
I am glad I test ran it; I feel better now that when I drop it in, I won't have any issues.

There is a pipe dope called "The green stuff". It's high temp resistant. I've used it for years and have never been let down.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

The white TFE pipe thread sealant at a hardware store works great too.  think you can get
a little tube for around $6.

I've used orange ultra-copper RTV on the threads of header bolts for years without issue.

I've heard with the white TFE paste, you can start using the system immediately.
No dry time wait.  I still waited 24 hours, though, before filling.
