Grounding issue???

I am trying t make sure that something is not draining my battery.

I was told to disconnect the neg cable and but a test light between the disconcerted terminal and the neg post.  if the light does not come one, I am good.  OK, so the light did not come on.

But, I checked the test light, and I am not sure if I have a problem or not.

If I put the light between the connected pos post and the neg post of the battery, light comes on.

If I put the light between the connected pos post and any other bare metal, including the disconnected neg terminal, the light does not come on.  Touch the neg terminal to the post, and the light lights up.

That is not an issue is it?

Your light is good then.
Is that what you are checking?

Sounds like it's working.


You'll want to check for a parasitic loss with a multimeter set for current. Most any meter you find will have a 10a fuse in it and that will cover most any draw parasitic draw like that. If you go over 10a, your battery is dying in a hurry.

Sounds like it's working.


You'll want to check for a parasitic loss with a multimeter set for current. Most any meter you find will have a 10a fuse in it and that will cover most any draw parasitic draw like that. If you go over 10a, your battery is dying in a hurry.

Tried that...not draw showing on my digi multimeter. 

I guess next step is to take the battery in and get it tested??

If there is no current draw reading on your multimeter and your battery is dying, your testing is done. Need a new battery.

Just make sure you eliminate a bad alternator first Jas. If it's not putting out enough juice, the battery will slowly die. Like to see 14 volts across the terminals when hooked up and running. Ian  :2cents:

Thanks guys...I will check that this weekend.  The Volt gauge says around 14 while running, but will check with the meter.

At this pont the battery will not last the day after running a bit.  But I have not had it out for a long run yet.

The alternator is newer then the battery, but that mean nothing these days.

just a quick update...charged the batter all day yesterday...had about 12.8 volts, not running.

Still no parasitic draw, but with both terminal disconnected, the battery is still draining.  I checked it abut 30 min ago and I have about 11.2 volts.

I am guessing my battery is toast.
