Not a Mopar issue, but can it be in the future???

Just read this article on Consumer Reports regarding Kia requiring customers to use Kia only Oil filters and necessity of correct oil viscosity.  What do you think?

For sure the oil viscosity can be a problem , I have heard that a lot of new engines have restricted passages in the oil system & using an oil too thick can starve areas of the engine , as for the filter I also agree , some makes are extremely poor quality with minimal filter media or not fine enough allowing trash through the media instead of trapping it . It is odd they picture Wix , I hear that they are some of the best made filters  :clueless:

I agree Wix is probably one of the best filters.  Don't know if Wix is happy being pictured there.  I use Wix filters for all my cars.  They did not say anything bad about Wix.  I also agree adding the proper viscosity, but how is a dealer to know?  I just think if all manufacturers made everyone buy THEIR make of filters, will put aftermarket oil filters out of business and more to the auto manufacturers.

Just sounds like Kia thought of a new way to make more money.  I doubt their filters are better than others.   :dunno:

 :dunno:  imo you can`t expect warranty when non Original parts were used... I don`t think any manufacturer would accept that  :clueless:

In the US we have a law which provides among other things, that the dealer/manufacturer must prove that any "non-original" part caused the problem in order to deny a warranty claim. Just using or having non-original maintenance parts such as oil filters, air filters, etc is not enough to deny a claim.

Not so sure about that. Honda Oddessy's are known for transmission problems. For a long time only Honda had the CORRECT parts to reman them. Don't use Honda fluid............. Warranty Void. I've heard some similar stories on some Mitsubishi and Toyota models too.  :dunno:

What's next folks?  Have to buy engine oil, wax, differential lubricant, brake fluid, windshield washer fluid, carpet cleaners straight from auto manufacturers?  I know there is a law, I just don't know what it says and how far it goes for consumers to use aftermarket product.  Pretty soon, aftermarket exhaust systems will void warranties, etc.  Looks like that's the new trend.  Then oil changes and regular maintenance can ONLY be done by the dealer.  That is just crap.  The DIYer, like myself, is a dying breed.  Except of course, after the warranty expires.

Our Kia dealerships are advertising 200,000 mile drive train warranties. If that just means using the correct filter and oil, lets get the US car makers to do the same.

My 2012 Tacoma supposedly has a "lifetime" powertrain warranty. Dont expect to ever use it and havent read the "requirements" either. I change my own oil (Mobil 1) and use the toyota filters bought in bulk. Important thing is following and documenting the manufacturers recommendations
