    A904 Common leak spots

    My A904 leaks and i am having a hard time narrowing it down to one spot. The trans is soaked. I Have changed the trans pan gasket and trans pan and that helped but the thing is still soaking wet. What are some normal areas for these trans to leak so I can try and save my brand new garage floor from looking like my transmission threw up everywhere.

    Trans pan gasket
    oil dipstick tube o-ring
    shift lever shaft seal(where valve body goes up through the case)
    snap ring access cover gasket on tailshaft
    tailshaft to case gasket
    tailshaft seal
    speedometer gear housing o-ring

    Almost every auto I've worked on had a leaking shift shaft seal.  Pans leak quite often from people overtightening them and warping the edge.  Those are the first two I'd check.  Spray the case down with brake cleaner and wipe it clean.  Go for a quick drive and look again.  Where it's freshly wet should give you an indication where it's leaking.

    is this shaft seal hard to replace with the trans in the car?

    I do clean the thing off but i'm still having a hard time figuring it out.

    You just have to drop the valve body.  You can then punch out the seal.  Piece of cake.

    I wonder if a parts store would have a cheap dye that you could add to the trans fluid.  That would help.

    I am a bit weary of working on transmissions since i have absolutely zero experience. Is it just as easy as removing the transmission pan, filter and valve body? I assume I would have to remove the shift levers too.

    It's very easy.  The worst part of the job is taking the pan down without drenching yourself in trans fluid.  Once the pan is off, you can loosen the pinch bolts on the kickdown pivot and shifter pivot levers and slide them off the valve body.  Then remove the filter and all the valve body bolts.  The valve body will come right out.  Just pull and the parking rod will come out of the tailshaft.

     :iagree: Just make sure to put it somewhere CLEAN.  there are lots of little passages in the valve body and you don't want to pick up something that will make your problems worse.
