Question on timing in general
« on: June 03, 2014 - 11:45:41 AM »
How do find out what my overall total timing actually is?  All I have is an 30 year old sun timing light with a factory damper and timing pointer on timing chain cover on the 440.  Do I need to add timing tape to my harmonic balancer, purchase an aftermarket damper with full timing markets or buy a new advanced timing light that shows total timing (don't really know what that is though).

Sorry about the basic question

Thanks, Jim

You could buy/rent a digital timing light. Hook it up and then start turning the knob until the damper and pointer line up on TDC. Then see what the light says the degrees are.

put a cut or a mark on the damper @ 2 3/8" clockwise from the factory mark & that is 36* so you can use your normal timing light & 0 on the scale is 36 , +2 is 38 etc
