Crank Pulley Non-AC 440 question
« on: June 11, 2014 - 05:16:01 PM »
This is a picture of the crank pulley that was on my 73 cuda.  Is this pulley for an AC 440 setup?  Do they pull apart or are they one unit?  They look like they can be pulled apart but they haven't budged and I'm afraid of bending them. This is sitting in a 73 non-AC 440 car with power steering.

In 73 a 440 was not available so you have a transplant engine. That looks like an A/C pulley not sure if it comes apart.

Thanks guess I should have said I understand its a transplant 440. My mistake.  I think its a A/C pulley also, but just wondering if I can make the pulley a non A/C pulley by separating them?  Which I don't think I can easily.

I think they are spot welded together :2cents:

Yep just found the four spot welds on the sides.  So for now I'm going to just reuse them.  I'll spend the money on more important things.   Thanks

So another twist to the reason I've been asking about pulleys.  I've been over heating "some" ever since I've owned the car. I dont have an aftermarket temp gauge on the car so I can't tell you how hot its getting.  I just know I'm getting overflow out the overflow tube onto the ground at times.  Last year I figure out I had an undersized water pump pulley on the car, 5 3/4 diameter.  I figure the pump was turning faster than it should, possibly creating "a technical term I can't think of right now'?  This term means something to do with mixing water and air to fast????  Do you guys know what this is called??

I figured I would order the correct water pump pulley for a non-AC motor from 440 source, thus slowing the pump down some.  Its 6 7/8 in diameter and is single grooved like the old one.  Now when I try and put the the new pulley on the water pump it hits my crank pulleys (which are pictured above).  I'm assuming I have a 4 grooved pulley for a AC car on my harmonic balancer?  Are these AC pulleys larger in diameter than non-AC pulleys on the crank?  This car only has power steering. Check out the link, do you guys think that this crank pulley is the correct one that I should be using instead?  http://store.440source.com/Double-Groove-Crank-Pulley-New-Reproduction/productinfo/132-1001/

cavitation

an underdrive smaller crank pulley will make your water pump and alternator spin slower. At idle, they
may be barely adequate.  I'd try your idle rpm around 1200 to see if cooling is better.  An aftermarket
temp gauge is almost essential, as stock can be really inaccurate.
