Best replacement mufflers for performance sound?
« on: June 11, 2014 - 05:32:58 PM »
Hello Everyone,
long time no type! :worshippy
I just discovered that my fairly new (low miles anyways) stock replacement resonators have small rust holes in them from short trip condensation I presume. are these needed with the round stock performance mufflers at the side?
Not even dirty yet! I think they were year one replacements.

Anyways,'70 Challenger 440-6 with stock manifolds and pipes in good shape running to mufflers & resonators and quad valance tips..

What replacement mufflers are recommended for the best performance sound in the stock mounting locations?
Horsepower isn't an issue (plenty)...I want the best sound upon start up and when "getting on it"....without excessive Droning at cruising speeds.
Do we loose the resonators or?   :dunno:
Thanks in advance!

I've got dynomax welded ultra-flows on my Duster, they're awesome. 100% better then flowmasters. I run Summit glasspaks on my Challenger. They're definitely loud, but they don't sound as good as the ultra-flows. But I'd take them over a set of flowmasters any day.

Stock 340 Exhaust Manifolds into TTI 2.5" complete H pipe system all the way to the TTI welded tips through Dynomax Welded Ultraflows.
I like it!  :2thumbs: Not quiet though.
You can hear them here. They sound even better when you step on the loud pedal.

I like the sound of the Hooker aero chambers too , Flowmaster would be near the bottom of the list , Dynomax are a good choice too .

:iagree:  I went with the same TTI package but increased to 3" pipes and ceramic coated polished headers.

I would think 3" would be overkill on a small block & much harder to keep quiet .

After this and a few other videos.

I agree it may be overkill but I wanted plenty of flow from my 408 stroker, and the OP has a 440 so that is why I suggested the 3" pipes.  And the OP did not mention about keeping it quiet.  Cudaragtop's video is not on the peaceful side either.  You can always add sound deadener in the cabin, or simply select a more mild muffler but I think it would be oxymoron to drive a quiet '70 Challenger with a 440.

I think Im with you on how you want your car to sound.  Mine has TTI system 2.5 with Dynomax Super Turbo.  But let's face it, everyone's desire on how they want their car to sound is too subjective.  You might like the Dynomax VT which is supposed to reduce drone.  The Super Turbo are mellow during idle, and I think they are pretty loud when I get on it.  Just depends on what you like.  Try their sound samples on their site:

Here is how mine sounds. 2-1/4" headers into 3" exhaust through Flowmaster 50 Series and TTi factory style exhaust tips.  No droning to speak of. Chryco-Psycho has spent some seat time in the car. He can attest to that. My car starts about 2:15 seconds into the video...   :burnout:
