tf3 won't upshift
« on: June 12, 2014 - 10:17:08 PM »
Recently decided to put my six pack on the 340 and didn't want to mess with linkages or cables so decided I would put in a tf3 kit from Transgo...installed and modded the valve body as per the directions and put it back in the car. First/ reverse felt slow to engage and felt kinda mushy.. Then no matter what gear the selector was in I only had first and reverse...took it all back apart and checked my work, reinstalled and had the same problem.. Figured something might be wrong in the valve body so I grabbed another one and installed the kit..put it in the car..reverse felt much better and crisp...manual low felt great...go to hit 2, nothing..3..the same...car stays in first/ takes off in first no matter what forward gear the shifter is in..the trans had no problems before this kit...I went to a different rear servo and a deep sump pan during this swap..other than that all is the same...band adjustments are good..servos air tested OK...tried it with and without kickdown....I am at a loss

Is something in the kit prevent governor pressure from causing the upshift? Or is it causing to much throttle pressure? Without a service manual to compare the modifications to the circuits, it's really hard to gauge what's being affected. I have also been trapped in hotels' for 2 months, with no access to my info's.  :clueless:

I'm betting you either have a stuck valve or have a valve/spring in backwards. Find a good valve body diagram and make sure all valves are in correctly. Make sure all valves move smooth and freely.

Also, you really should still run a kickdown linkage with the TF3 kit. Another option is to simply wire the kickdown lever in the wide open position. However, this will shorten the life of your trans if it's a street driven car. Bouchillon Performance makes a really nice kickdown cable set up that will work nicely with your 6 pack.

I may be wrong but I thought TF2 was harder shifts & TF3 was manual so you have to manually select every gear ?
