1970 challenger starter relay wiring
« on: June 13, 2014 - 03:31:49 PM »
Yesterday while I was at work my father-in-law AKA "the grim reaper of cars" tried to jump my challenger to move it. Somehow he fried the wire from the battery to the starter relay switch and melted the wire labeled fuseable link.  Does this wire run to the ignition switch and do I have to put an in-line fuse in when replacing this wire, if so what size?  Thanks

Ugg , did the fusable link save the wiring through the firewall ??
Yes you need to replace the fusable link , I forget what the gauge is though ,

The fuseable link saved most the wiring. I got some 10g wire with a 12g fuseable link I will probably put it all together tomorrow.  I haven't done a whole lot of wiring so I'm hoping I don't screw something up

Ok I have to ask - How do you fry the wire from the battery to the starter with a jump?

Did he reverse neg and pos and short the hell out of it?

Finally got some free time to go through things and found the hot coming off the starter relay switch fried at the block going into the firewall.  Both sides are toast.  Am I going to have to get a whole new wiring harness to repair this?

You can buy just the bulkhead connector.  You don't have to buy the entire harness.  Now is the time to make some electrical upgrades.  Have you read this article?

I don't know that I want to replace the whole harness.  If I pull the dash ill probably pull the whole interior and while the interior is out I might as well start doing a little body work...it's just a chain of events that's leads to spending way too much money
