Was that the same one that sold for $2.5 million several years back?  :clueless:
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

Can this 1 car drive up prices of all of our cars?  I doubt it.  This is the only matching #s 71 hemi cuda 4sp convertible.  The rarest high performance ebody that is only available to the filthy rich.  While it is nice to see it got extremely high $$$, I don't think my cuda is worth any more now than it was in the last year.

I think over-all it's great for the hobby.  :2thumbs:
I feel it's great for any hobby when the "best of the best" retains good value, whether it's collecting antique guns or making quilts....It's nice to know your time, effort and money you've invested is worth something at the end of the day....

I'm not saying you have to profit from it, but just knowning that others appreciate your passion enough to say it's worth something is a nice feeling  :2cents:

It kind of makes a person wonder if this sale is going to raise the prices of our cars or not, or benefit our hobby.

The general consensus around the internet is that there was more "smoke and mirrors" at that auction then money. The one thing that I saw in the video was when the price was at $3.35M and Mecum walks from the seller directly to the podium and raises his hand and the price jumps to $3.4M. Where did that bid come from?

Any thoughts on this?   :stirpot:

I saw Mecum do that a couple of times, but I'm not sure if he was relaying bids from the phones or just for the heck of it.  The seller had a hard number in mind and stuck to despite the numerous attempts to get him to lift the reserve.  It appeared there was someone on the phone that bid $3.5M at the end though so I guess that is what counts.  It may have some positive effect on the value of our cars, but I hate to see all the beat up '71's come out at ridiculous prices just because they saw this "one" go for a high price.

Here is the same car from around 2001 or 2002
I cut this out of the Everett Herald and saved it. Still have it pinned up at work. I think it sold for around $300K back then.

Can I ask a dumb question? On the You tube video it was stated that it was the original motor, never been touched, and I thought that running unleaded gas ruined the valve seats in motors from the 70s that were built to run on leaded gas, so where does the owner of this kind of vehicle find leaded gas?

You can put a lead additive in the tank with each fill up....Not sure how much it gets driven? Also...I doubt the Hemi is "untouched" most likely rebuilt at some point.

Amazing.

What a greedy seller.  Wouldn't let the car go for $3,450,000.  Had to have $3.5M.

Seriously?

At any rate, I just don't see how this car can go up much more in value.  I can clone that thing for $100k tops.  Try to clone a Ferrari California Spyder!  Which WILL go up in value.  Or a Shelby Daytona.

Not a fan of blue interiors.  Each thing is a different blue.  Dash, carpet, console, seats...all different blues!   Blech.  If it was a two-tone blue/white it'd be better.

Someone buy my '71 blue 'vert for a fraction of the price.   :ebay:

'71 383-auto 'Cuda 'vert (sold)

I was amazed that the 67 L88  Vette he also owned brought more money, 3.7 mill and he didn't lift the reserve. I remember several years ago during the price peek that the other B5 blue one sold at a R&M auction for 4.5 mill.

On a side note about colors, are there rarer Mopar colors than others? For e.g. if someone had a 440 6-pack RT/SE, would the car fetch more money if it had one of the rarer colors? Does anyone have any info on how many 6 pack cars were manufactured in each color?
