« on: June 16, 2014 - 11:51:04 AM »
Recently picked up a 77 440 block, 452 heads, 3830733 intake, 2 steel cranks, starter, mini starter , valve covers and a bunch of other assorted parts. Paid $300 for it all, how did I do?

Here's some pics:

Not sure yet. The block is bored .40 over and the pistons are the same diameter. I'm going to get the block sonic tested, magnafluxed and hot tanked to start. Once I cleanup the crank and pistons and see what condition they are in, I'll decide if it's more cost effective to just go stroker. I'm leaning towards the stroker but not sure yet. Also will do the same with the heads, it may be more cost effective to just go with aluminum heads depending on what it will take to rebuild the 452's, they are kinda rusty and definitely have not been run in a long time.

If I go stroker, I'd go with a 512, aluminum heads and intake and hope to be around stock small block weight territory. We'll see, I'm very new to engine building but I figure this is a good way to learn, I'll be asking lots and lots of questions

might as well stroke it , both cranks are cast not steel , otherwise you did OK on the price for all the parts

Cool, at :040 over and needing a crank anyway you look at it, no reason not to stroke it.  As for the heads, yes go with new aluminum ones, as you will have just as much money (if not more) into getting the 452 to flow, plus the addition of weight savings.

Hopefully the sonic test will clear the block for your build.
