Stock exhaust system pics wanted
« on: June 16, 2014 - 08:55:49 PM »

Hi, does anyone have good clear pics of the stock exhaust system for a dual exhaust ('72) 340 'Cuda?  I am starting from scratch because a prior owner modified it using generic hangers, and removed the resonators.  It would be helpful to see the hangers in place.  The pipes I took off are 2", but I guess the tips are 2 1/4" ??
There is a sort of "channeled" bracket bolted under the car below the L/R seat area, but it seems there should be one on the right too.

I have seen a few diagrams on exhaust part supplier websites (like Accurate) but no very helpful.

Thanks!

My 73 340 did not have a bracket under the r/h rear seat, only the left. Basically the r/h came out of the muffler, up and over the diff, there is a rubber mounted pipe bracket that bolted to the shock cross member that supported the pipe, it then when down into the resonator, the back end of the resonator has a bracket that bolts to a rubber chassis mount to support. The l/h pipe comes out of the muffler, is supported by a bracket under the l/h rear seat, then goes over the diff into the resonator, then again, the back of the resonator has a bracket that bolts to a chassis bracket.

Okay, the prior owner screwed one of those "tether" type mounts to the R/R underside in the same location as that left bracket.  Any photos of those under mounts in place?

Thanks.

Factory dual exhaust cars had 2 brackets behind the rear seat , single exhaust cars only had 1 but the bracket is available from TTI & other sources

All E Bodies 1970-74 should have the passenger side bracket WELDED to the floor because they all came with at least single exhaust the exited the passenger side. (I THINK...again not sure about the newer years)
Dual exhaust cars in 1970-72 got a similar bracket bolted to the floor...I believe as stated the 73-74's used a "barrel'' style mount bolted to the rear shock cross member.

Maybe 72 was a cross-over year so it could be possible for either style of mounting of the driver's side exhaust.

73's with dual exhaust used the two piece bolt-on style hanger on the drivers side.  It bolts to the floor pan.  One half goes on the under side, the other half goes on the interior.  The passengers side used a hanger that bolts to the shock x-member.  In 74, BOTH sides used the hanger that attaches to the shock x-member.  I'm not sure how 72 was set up.  The OP needs to look on the shock x-member and see if there is a bracket welded onto it for that newer style hanger.

So in 73 there wasn't a bracket welded to the floor like in 70-71 ? :screwy: ...Man there's a lot of differences in those newer cars....Good to know !

As Burdar said, 73 had a bolt on bracket under the LR floor that then had the hanger attached, nothing at all on the RR floor, the RH tail pipe had a brakcet bolted to the shock cross member. I have just taken my original factory dual system out of my Dec 72 build, 73 Cuda 340.

Thanks for all the information, and the photos so far guys, it will help.

So Burdar, on your car that pictured hanger is only on the right side?  What type of hanger mounts to the bracket that's bolted to the left side, under the seat area?
Mine has that very same fuel tank vapor box.

That hanger is only on the PS.  If your car used that style hanger, there will be a bracket welded onto the shock x-member for it to bolt to.  The link shows the hanger that is used on the DS.

Okay, I see, that looks like the left bolt-on bracket I have.  So I only need one of those, and one of the other ones you posted for the right resonator?  Both mufflers use the same hangers I assume?  Pictures speak volumes, thanks!  :)
