Screwed Up
« on: June 19, 2014 - 12:27:59 PM »
I had the bright idea that I needed to have more precise information on my water temp. and oil pressure than what my rally gauges were giving me. I bought great looking digital gauges and a pod and mounted them inconspicuasly under the dash. Now the screw up! I ran the black wire to the sending units, green wire to negative battery. Wrong! Should be other way around. Gauges work fine now, but my Rally gauges are all off even the tack doesn't work.
Did I burn them out somehow, is there a resister or something besides a fuse. Dash lights work, didn't even blow the fuse I connected to, and clock still works. Just wanted more gauges now all of them refuse to work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There is a voltage reducer that drops 12V down to 5V for your dash gauges. Maybe you fried it  :dunno:

Sounds possible! But my clock still works. I only wired into the fuse block and it didn't blow the fuse.

The clock isn't on the voltage limiter; it runs on 12 volts.  So let's hope it's only the voltage limiter that is toast.

Can I get to the voltage limiter from under the dash? What does it look like?

It is REALLY awkward to get it out without removing the cluster.  If you decide to try to do it, at least take out the radio.  The limiter is a little rectangular box about 1.5 inches long. It is attached with one screw right behind the fuel and temp gauges.  There are black wires attached to it.

The reg only feeds the oil , fuel & temp gauge , nothing to do with the tach just so you know

OK! You just burst my bubble :bricks1: I have an extra limiter on a standard cluster, but now that probably isn't the problem' because my tach did quite at the same time. :pullinghair:

Would it make any sense that only those gauges may have burnt out? How can I check?

re-read your first post and don't understand exactly what you did.  You say you connected the black wire to the senders.  There are three senders, so, were there three black wires, or, for example, did one black wire go to the temp sender on the engine, the terminal on the instrument cluster, or somewhere else?  It doesn't seem that reversing your digital gauges would do any harm unless they were powered by another wire.

The black wires on the two digital gauges go to the negative post on the battery and the green wires to the sending units. I reversed them. The red wires to the ignition. I would think it would only have damaged the digital gauges, but it didn't.

Are you using factory senders  or a different set connected to the digital gauges ?
connected backwards the power would be sent to the sending units directly not through the gauges & would back feed into the factory gauges if you are connected to the same senders . Factory gauges are fed  low power [5v] to the gauge then it grounds through the sending unit ,  putting 13 v back through the system would damage the factory gauges but the Tach is different , it has a 13v feed to it & grounds through the dash frame so why it would be effected is odd . Glass fuses can look ok but burn at the end not the center so I would start with testing for power at the the fuse block then the dash regulator & the tack feed , if there is no power you found the issue , if there is power the problem may be bigger & the factory gauges may have been damaged .

New senders came with the the gauges. For oil pressure I put a brass Y and added both senders. For water I had an extra port in the intake for the other sender. I put the ignition feed on the bottom right fuse in the OE block. The only fuse with no power is the top right fuse in the OE fuse block( not blown) which I haven't been near. Which fuse feeds the OE gauges. I've lost my wireing chart. Thanks for all the help! I need simpler problems for this simple mind!

Changed the limiter (can't move my arms anymore, but got it out) but that wasn't the problem. No change, no signs of life at all.

I did say it was awkward.  When you get the use of your arms back, can you check to see if you have 12v in the black wire that feeds the voltage limiter. That would be the middle connection on the limiter.  The voltage coming out of the limiter and going to the three gauges should be 5 or 6 volts, I think.

Have you found anything else that doesn't work anymore.

BTW the tach is on the radio fuse and the clock is on the cigar lighter fuse.
