Resto mods
« on: June 24, 2014 - 01:53:18 PM »
So in order to resto mod a classic mopar, what all would have to go into it, to make more road worthy up to par of today's standards..ie things like a/c better handling, better braking,etc..... Just looking for kind of a "parts list" for when I start my project so I know things I'll need to make it handle better on the road and on the track. I'd like to have it set up to handle curves and turns really well almost as if I was road track racing...

The most important question you have to ask yourself is how much money do you want to spend. The sky is the limit on some of this stuff, granted you could do some things on a budget but a no holes barred build could cost you north of 75K in parts not including labor or the cost of the car.

I agree. I am a fan of maximizing the factory equipment. Many others believe in ripping the factory stuff out and starting over.

What's your goal?

To put it as simple as possible...... Imagine takeing a 2009-current chally.... And putting the body of a 70 something cuda/chally on it. With either a 426, or a 440 with bolt on hemi heads....more than likely a 426...now that doesn't include things like power windows.... Or navi screens or any of that "shiny stuff".... Just performance and handling... And ac for those stupid hot florida summers..

Not exactly..... I'm more concerned with the chassis and handling.... Interior can be retro... Except for the obvious radio over an 8 track lol..... Basically.... If I was to use it for road course racing vs straight line drag racing..... Going fast is a definite, but being able to handle curves and brake, and just drive smooth like today's cars compared to 30 years ago.....

You don't want a BB Hemi if handling is your goal.

True.  I just want a hemi because it's a hemi.   :roflsmiley:

Surprisingly little.

New Hemi is the best all around motor.  Lightweight and very powerful.

Stock suspension is actually rather robust and well laid out.  Upgrades from companies like Firm Feel and Hotchkis fix what's needed.  It will serve 99% of drivers beyond their limit.

Good brakes (which will necessitate wheels and tires).

More than that you're getting into the bling factor.  IMNSHO

if I could get a new hemi for less than 15k.... I'd be all over it lol bad enough a car with minimal body work is gonna cost a bunch allready

john right!!!

im doing a resto mod cuda built for the track it really depends on how much you want to spend. ill give you a simple run down of what im doing and i price list
and this is all based on parts i like will vary from differnt builds.

so far
about 5 grand in sheet metal replacement.
front big bake kit from baer 1500
rear big brake kit disc 1200
rear suspension was 2500
front will be about 6000
rebuilding the 5.7 around 3000 just a guess if decide to bore and stroke it
front and rear wheels with rubber about 6000 "FORGELINE WHEELS"
tremec 5 speed set up theres another 4000
and then the interior which im leaving as stock as possible maybe around 2000 max

so like john has said it really depends on how much you would like to spend me personally im building my car to actually run at the track and be competative and more adjustable as well as who needs to build a car and let it sit in the garage or on a trailer lol

4k for the tranny? And thnx for the list this is pretty much was what I was looking for.... For the most part. I'm trying to look for a thread that someone has done, that has done all or similar to the things I want to do... And I agree what good is it on a trailer... I don't need a beauty queen, I want a rockstar lol.... Lots of power(useable) and ability to be driven hard when I want as well as daily...

Like the old song said... I'm on a LOW budget

Car - $7k
Engine (360) ~ $6k after all the incidentals.  Could easily knock $1k off from what I learned doing it a 2nd time (including going to a stroker B-block (not RB) next time)
Exhaust - $1450  Complete custom dual exhaust.  Had a kit on it.  Fit like crap.  Not including that cost.  Doug's Headers.
Trans (904) ~ $1200  Goal is to go 4spd and then Passon 5spd but I'm driving the car now
Rear end ~ $500 Swapped in a 3.23 Sure-grip, that's it.
Front Suspension ~ So far I'm in it about $2000.  That's including 3 pairs of t-bars.  Went to 1", now at 1.18", have some 1.22" waiting.  Have a 1.13 front sway but shopping for a deal on a 1.25" unit.  Includes Firm Feel III box and fast ratio pitman/idler.  My Hotchkis uppers are doing a great job sitting in the box still.  Need to get some adjustable strut rods and a few more odds and ends and I can swap in the re-inforced K-frame I have sitting in my basement.  Bilstein Shocks are working good for now.  I have a set of QA1 Single adjustable shocks, not sure what to do with them at the moment.
Rear Suspension ~ $900.  So far just Bilstein Shocks and a Hotchkis Rear Sway bar.  Still running stock 318/340 leaves.  My 175# Hyperco Fiberglass monoleafs are waiting for the 1.25" front sway bar.
Brakes ~ $1500.  Currently running 11.75" Late-B/R rotors with stock calipers and 10" rear drums.  I don't need more brake than this for autocross.  The other $1000 comes from a Baer 13" front brake kit.  The matching rear kit will cost ~ $700.
Wheels/Tires ~ $1400 17X9 Summit Racing Wheels and Falken RT615Ks.  They do ok.  I need slicks though for better competition (as in, my competition runs slicks!)
Body Work ~ $3500 and climbing.  Will get into the meat and potatoes of this in about a year and a half.  Good enough for dodging cones.
Interior ~ $600 Front seats and carpet (Corbeau driver's seat, generic passenger)

I buy things second hand (sometimes used) and look for sales.  I try to NEVER pay RETAIL!!!!  Last time out I was 67 out of 130 cars.  (and just last in class because I was on street treads).  All my prices include stuff that is still sitting in boxes and bought twice (or 3 times).  I have all the receipts at home, this is coming off of the top of my head, but I bet I'm pretty close.
